A special Mountain Moment from our First Responders Parade this past weekend. ❤️🤍💙

Our community came together to honor both those who sacrificed so much during 9/11, as well as our local first responders who battled the Aspen Acres fire earlier this summer. Because of their unwavering dedication, skill, and courage, the fire never reached the Wet Mountain Valley, the Sangre de Cristo Range, or the towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff. 👨‍🚒🇺🇸👮

This is what living in a small, rural community is all about. We take care of each other and pull together when we need to. ✨🏔️

Are you craving a moment of wonder in the mountains within a short drive?🏔️ Looking to unplug, slow down, and let nature soothe your worries for a day?🌲 Then the Horn Creek Lakes Trail might be exactly the experience you’re looking for. 🌿

✨ This 11-mile round-trip hike takes you deep into the Sangre de Cristo wilderness, winding through shimmering aspen groves and tall evergreen forests. The sound of a babbling creek accompanies you as bird song and rustling leaves melt your worries away. As you walk, the air is filled with the sweet scent of butterscotch and vanilla from the pines, while the aroma of crisp, rich, woodsy conifer lingers as you go deeper into the wilderness.

✨ And the view! When you reach the glistening alpine lakes, you’ll be standing in the middle of a spectacular cirque formed by long-gone glaciers that for centuries carved a deep bowl into the mountains—creating the steep, rugged, towering slopes that surround you on three sides like a natural amphitheater.

🧭 How to get to this wonderland: 🗺️

From the charming mountain town of Westcliffe, make your way up the dirt and gravel road (accessible by standard 2WD vehicles) to the Horn Creek Trailhead parking lots. There’s actually a smaller lower parking lot, and a larger upper loop parking lot with a dedicated space for horse trailers (and a pit toilet).

We recommend starting from the upper lot. From there, on foot start up the old ranch road heading west/uphill until you intersect with the Rainbow Trail. This stretch is wide and easy, a little under a mile long. Once you hit the Rainbow, turn right (north) and follow it for a quarter of a mile until you come to the junction for the Horn Creek Trail. Turn left onto the Horn Creek Trail and follow the trail west.

[📍Note: If you started from the lower lot, the directions are slightly different. You’ll need to follow the lower lot trail until it splits. If you go left at the split, you’ll end up in the upper parking lot and intersect with the old ranch road. If you go right, you’ll hit the Rainbow, but you’ll need to then turn left (south) and go about .5 miles to get to the Horn Creek Trail sign.]

Once on the Horn Creek Trail, you’ll be climbing steadily alongside Horn Creek through the aspen and pine forests. You'll cross the main creek twice along the way. The forest gradually thins as you gain elevation, until you break out above treeline into open alpine tundra.

Once you're above the trees, look back east. This is one of the big “wow” moments: a hanging valley, with views all the way down to Westcliffe and the Wet Mountains beyond!

As you continue down the path, you'll pass a couple of small lakes/ponds in the upper basin, pushing through a short stretch of willow brush before reaching the main lake.

And then comes the big payoff…

As you emerge into the basin, you’ll get that awe-inspiring mountain moment as the entire Horn Creek basin opens up around you, framed by towering peaks and the dramatic cirque below Mount Adams.

🏞️ Panoramic mountain views
🍂 Aspen and evergreen forests
💦 Horn Creek and alpine lakes
🥾 11 miles round trip
⛰️ Approximately 9,370 feet at the lake trail junction
🌩️ Start early to beat those afternoon storms

The trail sees less traffic than many of Colorado’s popular alpine lake hikes, making it a great choice if you’re looking for a quieter wilderness experience.

Pack your water and snacks, start early, and discover the wonder that awaits in the Horn Creek basin. 🏔️✨

Join us for Westcliffe’s First Responders Parade! 🇺🇸 Show your support and give thanks to all of our incredible first responders who battled the historic Aspen Acres fire. 🧑‍🚒👮‍♀️👨‍🚒

Because of their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication, the fire never reached Westcliffe, the Wet Mountain Valley, or the Sangre de Cristo range. We owe them more than words can convey. This parade is our community’s way to say THANK YOU! ❤️

As we honor our first responders, we will also remember the first responders and victims of 9/11 on the 25th anniversary.

📍The parade will be held on Main Street in Westcliffe on Friday, September 11, at 5:30pm.

Imagine arriving in a rural mountain town, not a stoplight in sight, as people stroll down an historic main street lined with ice cream and coffee shops, cute stores, art galleries, and restaurants with a distinctly western vibe. 🤠 A cool breeze blows off the towering mountains that overlook the town, some stretching to 14,000 feet high. ⛰️ And in the middle of it all, antique and classic cars go rumbling by, like something out of a 1950s movie set. 🛻

That was Westcliffe this Labor Day weekend! ✨

The annual High Altitude Horsepower Car Show Westcliffe was on Saturday, with 141 registered classic cars parked along Main Street. It was such a cool sight, made even more surreal when the occasional hot air balloon floated by. 🎈

If you didn’t make it this year, no worries! There’s always something interesting happening in Westcliffe, especially this fall season. 🍂
