One of the things I have been wanting to implement in my weaving practice is using second hand materials more. I'm currently working through my fiber stash and using what I have while also experimenting with making my own textile for weaving. I ventured out this weekend to find some material to experiment with and found some lovely chartreuse!
A few things I've learned in creating "yarn" from old textiles: 1. The process of turning the textile into a usable weaving material is a bit tedious. I cut through the pad of my fingertip trying to strip fabric 😬 if you have easier ways of doing this I'm all ears! 2. Weaving is a slow craft and turning old fabric into a usable form takes even more time. 3. You have to be patient and really consider how the textile will fray, shred, etc.
I'm loving the way this is turning out and hope to include it in my show with Too Cool 4 Spool on Sept 29 in Ohio Dominican University Werhle Gallery, we'll even let you touch the art 😉
