Ever wonder what actually goes into making one of my spindle liners? Hereโ€™s an inside look at my process! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Other than material selection, this is how I manufacture my spindle liners for draw tubes under 40" long:

๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ STEP 1 โ€” PRINTING
Each liner is printed in 3 sections, allowing me to produce longer liners while maintaining the dimensional accuracy and customization I need.

๐Ÿ“ STEP 2 โ€” PRECISION LOCATING
I design each section with locating bosses. These make assembly much easier and, more importantly, ensure the sections line up properly so the stock through-hole remains seamless from end to end.

๐Ÿงน STEP 3 โ€” CLEANUP
As soon as the parts come off the printer, they go through deburring and cleaning. Every section gets prepared before assembly.

๐Ÿงช STEP 4 โ€” CHEMICAL BONDING
I use a plastic chemical bonding adhesive to secure all three sections into their proper position.

๐Ÿ”ฅ STEP 5 โ€” HEAT STAPLING
Once bonded and aligned, I heat staple the three sections together. This mechanically reinforces the joints and adds another layer of durability to the finished liner.

WHY I CHOSE ASA FOR MY SPINDLE LINERS

When I started developing my spindle liners, one of the biggest questions was simple:

What material makes the most sense for the environment they actually live in?

ABS and ASA are both strong, capable materials, and their heat resistance is actually fairly comparable depending on the specific filament. So it wasn't simply a matter of picking whichever material had the higher temperature rating.

For me, ASA made more sense for the application.

One of the things I enjoy most about taking on custom projects is that every new challenge expands my knowledge.

Lately, I've been diving into the engineering behind O-ring groove design. It may seem like a simple rubber seal, but there's a lot of science involved. For an O-ring to seal properly, the groove has to be designed so the O-ring is compressed by the correct amount, typically 10โ€“30%, depending on the application. Too little compression can lead to leaks, while too much can cause excessive wear, friction, or even premature seal failure.

Understanding the relationship between groove dimensions, O-ring cross-section, material, and operating conditions helps ensure a reliable, long-lasting seal.

Every project is another opportunity to learn, improve, and deliver a better product. That's one of the things I love most about engineering and manufacturing.

One thing I truly believe gives Tool Protection Services an edge is real-world manufacturing experience.

I've spent most of my career on the shop floor, working my way up through the industry, from a Laser Operator, to CNC Setup, CNC Programming, and now serving as a CNC Program Manager. Today, my responsibilities include keeping 8 five-axis machines and 7 four-axis machines running while also personally programming a Mill-Turn machine.

This isn't just a business to me, it's a solution built by someone who lives and breathes manufacturing every day.

Because I've worked in a wide variety of manufacturing environments, I'm comfortable taking on unique challenges and developing practical solutions that actually work in the shop.

Yesterday, a friend reached out with an interesting request.

"Can you 3D print some PSA Slab Guards?"

I'll be honest, I had never even heard of them.

After doing a little research, I found out that PSA slabs are the protective cases used for collectible trading cards after they've been professionally graded. It's a huge hobby with collectors who want to protect and display cards they've invested in.

He handed me $20 and said, "I need ten."

While my primary focus is additive manufacturing solutions for the machining industry, I actually enjoy these smaller projects that fall outside my normal scope. They expose me to industries and products I might never have discovered otherwise.

Every new challenge teaches me something, whether it's about design, materials, tolerances, or an entirely different market. That knowledge makes me a better designer, a better problem solver, and ultimately helps me build better products for all of my customers.

Sometimes the smallest projects provide the biggest lessons.
