Rachel Stillman arrived at an estate sale and walked into a generational standoff.

Five men in their 20s, hunting for vintage tees to resell, were bickering with an older group over who had earned the first spot in line. When the doors of the west Philadelphia home finally opened after a three-hour stare-down, the resellers crowded around the organizer until she waved them inside.

They burst in, sweeping armfuls of clothes into large IKEA bags, barely stopping to see what they had grabbed. By the time Stillman crossed the threshold, the racks were picked clean.

“Some of them really do just disrespect women, disrespeat people who have been doing this much longer,” said Stillman, 25, owner of a vintage shop in Philadelphia.

Fueled by a booming resale market, the estate sale has morphed from a leisurely weekend outing into an elbows-up affair.

In the 21st century, the sales are prompted by what Julie Hall, former director of the American Society of Estate Liquidators, calls the four Ds: death, debt, downsizing and divorce. The circumstances are somber, the spectacles they create are anything but.

Justin Cage and Keri Sansevere, who run an estate-sale business, regularly wrangle shoppers high on the adrenaline of scoring a bargain.

“Human decency goes out the window because there is such a heightened emotional state,” Sansevere said, noting a customer once spit on another over a set of silver and another ripped a bag of toilet paper out of another shopper’s hands.

The last few days have been exactly what I needed…. in Ocean City, Maryland with my family, enjoying one of my favorite places on the East Coast.

There's just something about old Ocean City I love. I love the history, the Boardwalk, and the traditions that have been around for generations. Two of my favorite stops are always Trimper Carousel, which has been spinning since 1912 and is one of the oldest continuously operating carousels in America, and the legendary Haunted House, which has been going since the 1960s.

One of the highlights of the trip was spending the day with my grandparents and my aunt in Berlin. We wandered through a few antique stores, and stopped for a pie.

At one shop we came across a child's rocking horse. It looked exactly like the one that's been in my grandparents' home for generations. It originally belonged to my grandfather, then his children rode it, and later his grandchildren did too. He affectionately named him “Trigger." Seeing that horse instantly brought back memories for all of us. It's funny how an object can transport you back decades in an instant.

As someone who buys antiques every day, it's a good reminder that the true value of many pieces isn't found in a price guide or at an auction it's found in the stories they carry and the generations they've connected.

I'd love to hear your story. What family heirloom do you have that may not be worth much monetarily, but means the world to you because of the memories attached to it?

Few brands are as tied to Baltimore as National Bohemian Beer, better known to generations of Marylanders as “Natty Boh.” First brewed in Baltimore in 1885, Natty Boh became a true hometown icon, complete with the famous one-eyed mascot, Mr. Boh, and the slogan “From the Land of Pleasant Living.” At one time, National Brewing was one of the largest breweries in the region, and Baltimore’s Brewers Hill neighborhood was home to not only Natty Boh, but also Gunther, and other legendary breweries. Fun fact: the National brewery complex is also credited as the birthplace of the first commercial six-pack in the 1940s!

This vintage National Bohemian beer box is more than just advertising, it’s a piece of Baltimore history and a reminder of the city’s rich brewing heritage. From old signs and trays to bottles, boxes, and brewery memorabilia, these items help tell the story of Charm City’s industrial past.

We are always buying items from Baltimore breweries including National, Globe, American, Gunther, Arrow, Schaefer, and many others.

What pieces of Baltimore brewery history do you have tucked away? Old beer signs, bottles, trays, cans, boxes, or advertising? We’d love to see them!

This incredible Masonic piece is a reminder that so many families have treasures tucked away from organizations their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers proudly belonged to. From Masonic medals and rings to pins, badges, watches, fraternal items, and lodge memorabilia, these pieces tell a story and deserve to be appreciated.

At Tommy’s Antiques & Collectibles, we are always looking to purchase these types of items outright. Whether it’s a single ring in a jewelry box or an entire collection that has been passed down through generations, we would love to take a look.

Now this is the kind of stuff I love finding. Beautiful old French bronze statues just have a look to them that modern decor can’t touch. The detail, the movement, the expression… they just don’t make things like this anymore.

One of the best parts of this business is coming across unique pieces with personality and history behind them. From bronzes and artwork to collections packed away for decades, you never know what you’re going to find next.

If you’ve got antiques or collectibles you’ve been thinking about selling, send me a message. I’m always buying collections big or small.

A sweet piece of local history! These antique chocolate molds came from my friends at Log Cabin Candies, and I’m incredibly thankful they thought of me when they decided to downsize part of their collection.

For generations, Log Cabin has been a Fallston landmark and a tradition for so many Maryland families. The business dates back over 100 years, eventually becoming a staple on Belair Road where countless people stopped for holiday chocolates, pecan logs, Easter candy, and family memories.

These old molds are more than just tools, they’re pieces of Harford County history. You can almost picture the countless chocolates and holiday treats that came out of them over the decades.

At Tommy’s Antiques & Collectibles, we love preserving local history like this. Whether it’s advertising, antique store displays, silver, signs, or unique pieces from longtime Maryland businesses, we’re always looking to buy collections big or small. Give us a call or send us a message!
