Lightfoot II (Savage 99) Update…….

The Lightfoot II is a scope mount for the Savage 1895, 1899, and 99 ri**es that were produced from 1895 up until 1954 for ri**es that were not drilled and tapped at the factory. Savage did not start drilling and tapping for optics until 1954. This allows the owner of one of these ri**es to not have to alter it and retain its originality and decreasing the value.

We are getting closer to making these available. I know, I know, there are a lot of anxious folks out there that are ready to order and get them on their 99s for this upcoming season.

We have finished our test runs with the first prototypes and the ole Judge, Michael Valentine is happy with the results for his r***e.

For clarity, here is what will be offered first.
Type 1 Leupold ring mount - this mount (pictured) will cover Savage 99s produced from approximately 1921 up through 1954. Most of these ri**es were/are consistent in as far as the distance between the rear 3/8” dovetail slot and the receiver. With the testing now complete, Steve Hasse will do a production run of 50 to 60 of these models that should be completed in a few weeks.

In development - A Type 2 Leupold ring mount is in the works. This model will cover 1895s and 1899s produced from 1895 to 1920. These mounts will be a bit longer in order to cover the variations of length between the rear dovetail slots to the receivers. We are hoping to have the prototypes for this model completed by October or November of this year.

In development - Type 1A Picatinny rail version to cover the years identified above in the Type 1. This will allow someone to use the rings of their choice and offer more flexibility in as far as eye relief. We are also hoping that the prototypes of this model will be completed by October or November of this year.

What will be provided with the mounts.
1) Dovetail slot blank with two retaining screws and one center set screw.
2) Two rear tang screws.
3) Two 10-30 x 0.26” with modified filister slot head screws for the rear scope ring and windage adjustment.

SCOPE RINGS WILL NOT BE PROVIDED.

What still needs to be done before we can start taking and processing orders:

1) Finish standing up the web site. Currently working on a glitch for the payment processing along with a few other minor issues.
2) Finalize an agreement with a local production machine shop to produce the 10-30 x 0.26” rear windage screws in bulk so they can be provided with the Type 1 and Type 2 mounts.

If for some reason the production of the rear windage and ring screws are delayed in being produced, I can probably provide you with a mount if you have a set of your own from an older Leupold or Redfield base mount. If you do, PM me here on Facebook or email me at [email protected] .

I am going to try my best to have at least 10 of these Type 1 mounts available in time for this years Rendezvous. My presence at this years event is still up in the air at this point due to my mothers current condition. If I can’t go, I will try my best to send 10 of these up with someone else to be put on display and to sell.

The price again for the Type 1 mounts is going to be two hundred and thirty bucks plus shipping.

To All, I wanted to provide an update regarding my current shop backlog status. Unfortunately, I am experiencing a delay due to unforeseen personal circumstances. Following a recent stroke, my mother required care at a nursing home and Hospice services. I will be traveling to Texas for approximately the next week to prepare for an estate sale and put her house on the market. Finished up the 99 EG for Bernie McNamee. It needed just a bit more work sealing up the tang.

I tried something different in as far as bluing with this 1945 production EG. There was a substantial amount of red rust on the receiver and barrel. I carded off as much of the rust that I could but I felt that the old bluing or what was left of it needed to be stripped off completely. Normally I would just run it through degreasing and then put it through either hot #7 salts or hot SteelKote salts. With the amount of prep and polishing that the metal needed, I decided it would be best to take it through rust bluing. With this one, I tried something different. For the initial bluing, I took it through 5 cycles of Mark Lee express blue - heat, apply, card with steel wool, repeat (5x). After that, I took it through an additional 5 days in the damp sweat box and let this Virginia humidity do its thing. Over the 5 days, I applied the Rust Blue American solution - apply, let it sit for 24 hours, card it, repeat (5x). I probably could have extended the process a few more days with the Rust Blue American solution, but after 5 days, everything was looking good. As much as I hate rust bluing, with some of these old 99s along with other old sh****ns and ri**es, it’s the best course of action to take. I have a little more work to do on this r***e for Bernie McNamee in strengthening the tang area a bit more overnight with applying resin. Finished up with a 1913 production Savage 1899 .22 Savage HP takedown. Stock set came back to life and I put the metal parts through old school rust bluing with the use of a damp / sweat box.

I picked up a couple of oldies but goodies today over in Maryland. The one on the left is a German Simson & Co single shot .6mm bolt action and the one on the right is a Westernfield 46A .22 S, L, and LR five shot bolt action. Should be fun projects in the future.
