Every once in a while, the stars align… and this is one of those times!!!

We have ONE unexpected opening in our production schedule for a custom project with a shorter-than-normal lead time.

If you’ve been dreaming about a custom playroom, playhouse bed, therapy gym, climbing wall, sensory space, loft, or one-of-a-kind piece for your home, this is a rare opportunity to get on our schedule sooner than usual!

At hello jo + co, every piece is thoughtfully designed and handcrafted by our family, from the very first sketch to the final installation. No mass production. No cookie-cutter designs. Just custom pieces created specifically for your family or business and your space.

We’ve had the privilege of handcrafting and delivering our work for families from Los Angeles to New York City, Minneapolis to San Antonio, Detroit to Denver, Chicago to Atlanta from Las Vegas to Miami and beyond!

I’d love to hear from other custom makers, designers, and small business owners… where do you draw the line between “part of the job” and “paid design work”?

When you create something completely custom, the design process can take HOURS, sometimes days.

We don’t just build what’s ordered. We spend time learning about the client, measuring spaces, brainstorming ideas, creating layouts, making revisions, sourcing materials, and figuring out how to make their vision actually work.

And honestly? Sometimes we spend DAYS designing a custom piece or an entire space… only for the client to take our design and try to have someone else build it.

So I’m curious:

Should custom design work require a design fee or deposit upfront?

Or is the design process simply part of creating a custom piece and something you take the risk on until the client commits to the build?

We’ve always wanted to make the process as easy as possible for our clients, but as a small family-owned business, our time is valuable too.

I’d genuinely love to hear from other business owners and even clients. What feels fair to you? 👇

Check out the hidden bookshelf under the bottom of the playhouse in the 5th slide! This was our first time creating that & we love how it turned out! This playhouse was 100% custom from measurements, colors, to the awesome little book shelf.
