Montana Toy Company has roots that reach back to when a little girl was given the gift of a white stick horse.

This little girl out galloped the wind, jumped high, and rode her way through childhood on the back of that stick horse. A quarter century later, that little girl is now the owner of Montana Toy Company. Having deep heritage with horses, Montana Toy Company aims to restore the time-honored craftsmanship and artistic integrity traditionally found in toy making. Located in Wibaux, Montana our produc

THIS or THAT? These are my new dolls that I will have available on my website shortly. I will have limited quantities available of these fabrics. I love the flocked, swiss dot overlay on the skirts. They turned out sweet and classic. So which do you like better? Pink girl or Purple girl?

Last summer I picked up two field guides. One for ornithology and one of Montana’s native flowers. Birding took off hard in this house. It has become a near daily activity for my girls to seek out birds and identify them in the “birding” book. We now have two copies, and to be quite honest, it really isn’t enough. Taking turns with preschoolers can be a challenge and the birding book is sometimes the book that my soon-to-be two year old wants to take to bed with her. Many brawls have broken out over who gets to hold the birding books…but my point is that I wanted to help the girls pursue new interests and find them the resources to learn and become passionate about something. I am an enthusiast in so many areas, and I wanted my kids to experience what that is like. To find something fascinating to learn about, to do, or to look forward to.

We’ve been working since last fall toward finishing my new workspace. Until now, I have been working in my basement where I can work adjacent to my children while still trying to make toys available for sale. But since last fall, and through the combined efforts of many, we were able to renovate an 80-ish year old out building in the far reaches of the back farmyard and convert it into what we are calling my she-shed. The she-shed serves as a toy factory and office space. I’m grateful for the space as well as the quiet and uninterrupted hours that I have there to work at night after putting the littles down for bed. We are so close to finishing and I can’t wait to feel settled in the space.

The Toy Maker’s Year: I’ve started on Christmas prep. Yes, that might sound a bit sad and blasphemous, but I am a manufacturer and my toys need to be ready by fall. Luckily, I have already reordered a lot of my big purchases for the year. Some components have to be specially made by the hundreds or even thousands and sometimes that can take nearly two months. Therefore yes, Christmas prep starts in May and you guessed it, the first steps are to do physical inventory counts of both raw materials and finished goods. This week I will also be writing down projected sales for the rest of the year and ordering what I will need in raw materials.

The Toy Maker’s Year: I’ve decided that it might be interesting to some of my followers to see what a year looks like for a toy maker. Yes, It’s nearly June. I do see that, but to be perfectly honest, the beginning of the year is a lot of Christmas burnout, bookkeeping and tax prep, keeping up with shipping orders and working on non-work related projects. THUS! The Toy Maker’s year is more likely to start in May. I have many new and exciting projects and a truckload of things to get done this year, so follow along!
