Across 50 short essays, McCormick examines Kansas through its history, the Kansans who have worked toward social change, and contemporary issues shaping life in the state. He explores Kansas’ role in the Civil War, student-led sit-ins, affirmative action, and school desegregation, alongside current issues including reproductive rights, police-community relations, bail, and the continued influence of Jim Crow-era thinking on state politics and policy.
