Since opening in November 2024, Left on Read, an independent Black-owned bookstore in Wichita, Kansas, has become a gathering place for readers and community members to discover new voices, connect, and explore Black literature. Founded by Dr. Tasha, the bookstore was created to amplify representation and provide a welcoming space for people to learn and grow.

But keeping the bookstore running has brought financial challenges, including an unexpected move to a new location and the loss of grant funding that supported one of Dr. Tasha's interconnected projects. While she continues teaching and taking on additional work to support the business, Left on Read needs help maintaining its daily operations and planning for the future.

As the bookstore approaches its second anniversary, Dr. Tasha has started a fundraiser to help cover staffing, inventory, programming, and operating expenses. The support would help strengthen the business and allow Left on Read to continue serving its community for years to come.

💜 COMMUNITY SUPPORT ANNOUNCEMENT 💜
We believe that healing, growth, education, and connection are all parts of the same journey.

Recently, Kansas' only Black-owned bookstore, Left on Read, shared that the loss of grant funding has created significant operational challenges, leading them to launch a fundraising campaign to help sustain the bookstore and the community space they have worked so hard to build.

For many, Left on Read is more than a bookstore. It is a place of learning, representation, conversation, and community. It is a space where stories are preserved, perspectives are expanded, and people are invited to feel seen.

As a way of supporting that mission, we are honored to announce that all altar blessings received during the month of November will be donated directly to Left on Read.

Every prayer placed on our altar, every intention shared, and every blessing offered throughout the month will not only support your personal journey but will also help support a local community space that is working to create positive change in Wichita.

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at a day at Left on Read, featuring books headed to the shelves and a little story about how my high school and college jobs helped me find work I loved and eventually led to Left on Read.📚

🙏🏾 This means even more after the way you all showed up and showed out last week. Many of you visited for the very first time, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Some of you have been longtime supporters, and you still made your way to see us, donated, or shopped online. It all means SO MUCH. Shout out to Samone Thomas for holding us down for two of our busiest days in a long while, including a major event hosted in our space Saturday morning.

🙏🏾 We had a stellar day at Left on Read, seeing familiar faces, welcoming new ones, and hearing from so many of you about the importance of literacy, the community we’ve cultivated together, and keeping this thing going. Thank you for showing up and sharing what this space means to you.

👩🏽‍🏫 Our favorite teacher-volunteer, Mrs. Samone Thomas, will be holding things down for us this Friday and Saturday. Be sure to give her a warm welcome!
