It's time for another episode of Friday Facts with Sheila 👩🏼‍🏫📚. It's kind of long so I hope you will muster through to the end 😉.

Vintage (and not so vintage) costume jewelry has been having its moment. We know the usual suspects like Monet, Swarovski and maybe Napier. But have you heard of Kenneth J Lane or Nolan Miller? I had not until I recently came in possession of a few of their pieces.

First we have Kenneth J Lane. He was an award winning American costume jewelry designer who had the ability to copy high end jewelry from just a quick glance. He then started creating his own designs. A fashion industry insider showed them to Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor who bought some pieces and told her friends. Society reporting got wind of it and that publicity launched his business in 1963.

His clientele included Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush. Jackie Kennedy even commissioned fake copies of some of her jewels so she could comfortably wear them in public while the real ones were tucked away in a safe.

More recent celebrities seen wearing his designs include Lady Gaga, Rhianna, Miley Cyrus and Madonna. He started selling on QVC in the late 1990s.

In 1966, a reporter with The New York Times said that the "most important men in a fashionable woman's life were her hairdresser, make-up artist and Kenneth J Lane." That's pretty high praise, don't you think?!

Next we have Nolan Miller, another award winning American fashion and jewelry designer and a television costume designer. He said "When I was about in 5th or 6th grade I made up my mind - I fell in love with movies and I thought I want to design gorgeous costumes for gorgeous stars and it was my lifelong ambition. I never wanted anything else. I never changed." When he couldn't find work in the entertainment industry, he worked in a florist shop in Beverly Hills. That turned out to be fortuitous as that's where he met Aaron Spelling who hired him to design clothes for his different television shows.

This is the part where, if you're under the age of 40, you will probably have to Google things 😜😁.

He designed costumes for Green Acres🚜, The Love Boat 🚢 and Charlie's Angels . But (and I also didn't know this) he is best known for Dynasty, a 1980s prime time soap opera (yes, I watched it with my Mom 📺🫣). His designs made thick shoulder pads, sequined gowns 👗 and wide brimmed hats 👒 trendy. And for you Wednesday Addams fans, he designed Morticia Addams' 1964 iconic dress. He designed a line of jewelry for QVC for 20 years.

You know what day is!! It's Friday Facts with Sheila 👩🏼‍🏫.

We all love some Fenton Art Glass!

Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 in Martins Ferry, OH in an old glass factory by brothers Frank and John Fenton. They started out as a decorating company that purchased blanks from glass manufacturers and placed their own decorations on them. In 1906 they built their own factory in nearby Williamstown, VA. Towards the end of 1907 they were the first to make carnival glass. In 1908, John left and founded his own company.

Frank was the designer and decorator and from 1905 to 1920, the designs being influenced by Tiffany and Steuben. Jacob Rosenthal, a famous glass chemist who is known for developing golden agate and chocolate glass, was the man behind the different colors.

During the Great depression and WWII, due to shortages, Fenton made practical items such as tableware and mixing bowls while also creating new colors. In 1940, they started selling Hobnail items in cranberry opalescent, green opalescent and French opalescent. The Hobnail pattern was such a success, it allowed the company to not only exist during the war but also allowed them to expand after the war.

In Aug 2007 they announced they would be ceasing operations however, in December they released a statement that due to an unexpected buying frenzy and internal restructuring, they would remain open until at least spring of 2008. They were able to stay in business until 2011 with the traditional glassmaking. The factory remained open, producing teardrop earrings and handcrafted glass beads using their signature colors, techniques and hand-decorated artistry.
The Fenton gift shop remains open just minutes from the original factory. It is still handmade using original moulds at a factory in Ohio.

I'm here, I'm here! Friday Facts with Sheila, still making it on Friday! 😮‍💨🫣

A ship decanter (also known as "Rodney" decanters, named after British Admiral Rodney, who used them during the American Revolution) were originally designed in the 18th century to keep the vessel from tipping over or spilling the contents while at sea ⚓🏴‍☠️🌊

It was effective due to having a flat, bell-shaped bottom giving it a very low center of gravity. That shape also allowed for greater oxygen exposure that is ideal for opening up heavier red wines. 🍷🍇🍷

Once a must-have in a Captain's quarters, this design is now a go-to in homes and on bar carts for safely serving wine and spirits. 🍷🥃🍾

Yay 😄 it's Friday Facts with Sheila 👩🏼‍🏫!!

Today's topic is Wedgwood Jasperware. It's so pretty 🤩! It is an unglazed, matte-finish stoneware first developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. Known for it's classical cameos and signature "Wedgwood blue", it remains one of the most famous and enduring ceramic innovations in history 👩🏼‍🎨.

Did you know? While the iconic pale blue with white neoclassical reliefs is the most famous, Jasperware was developed in several different colors: the pale blue, dark blue, sage green, lilac, yellow, black and white. The hand applied reliefs in contrasting colors (usually white) create a cameo effect and illustrate mythological, botanical or historic scenes.

To authenticate and date your piece, or the one you find when treasure hunting 😉, if it just says "Wedgwood" it's generally made before 1891. "England" or "Made in England" was produced after 1891. If there is a three-letter code stamped on the bottom, this often indicates the month, potter and year of production. Authentic pieces have exceptionally crisp, hand-applied reliefs; blurry or shallow reliefs can indicate lower-quality reproductions.

What color do you have or are wanting to find! I have the pale blue and green. I would love to find lilac and black 💜🖤. Purple is my favorite (can't you tell) but the black is stunning!

Annnd we're back with Friday Facts with Sheila 👩🏼‍🏫📚.

What in the heck is a silent butler, you ask? In a nutshell, these were popular in the 20th century because they allowed hosts to clean up without the noisy commotion of a servant (though servants used them as well).

They typically featured a hinged lid to hide debris and had a handle for easy carrying. In the mid-1900s, hosts would use them alongside a small brush to clean crumbs off the dinner table or to empty ashtrays for guests in a smoking room. The name comes from the idea that the tray does the job of a butler quietly and without ceremony.
