Since April we’ve been seeing Hummingbirds in our yards! Recently we’ve been getting a common question at the store: How do I attract more hummers to my yard? There are a few things that you can do. As many of you know, hummingbirds need a pretty consistent food source. Hummingbirds generally eat every 15-20 minutes and consume half their weight everyday! These speedy birds enjoy nutrition from multiple sources:
1. Bugs
2. Nectar from flowers: Plant nectar rich, native flowers such as Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis), Bee Balm (Monarda fistulosa), Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens), and Salvia
3. Nectar from feeders: Hanging multiple hummingbird feeders means more hummingbirds in your yard. Remember to fill and change your nectar solution as much as possible. If you see any sign of cloudiness, contaminants are present and should not be given to hummers.
Additionally, having a source of moving water in your yard should encourage more hummingbirds to your yard. While they get all of their nutritional needs from nectar and bugs, they still require water for bathing and preening. If you have the space, consider adding a mister, dripper, or bath.
If you have any questions or just stock up on supplies, stop by the store!
