Will finished the initial hollowing process of this giant spalted beech vessel. Now that it is hollowed and "waxed" inside and out to slow the drying process, we will wait 2 years for it to fully dry before putting it back on the lathe.

After a full day of hollowing, Will has made it about one-third of the way in and will pick up again tomorrow. For now, he’s applying end sealer to help retain moisture and prevent the wood from splitting as he continues working on the interior.

Will is working on hollowing a large spalted beech vessel. He finished shaping the exterior yesterday, and today will be devoted entirely to the hollowing. It’s a slow, delicate process, and he’s hoping the torque won’t be too much pressure on the foot and cause it to break from the chuck.

All the finals are complete and made to fit the lid. Now all the lids need the finials installed permanently, with an abalone disc applied under the lid on the other side of the finial hole. There's a lot more work to do but this batch of 20 is nearing completion. We will await a warm spray day in the Spring for the next major step.

And soon we will go down to our storage room for another batch of 20 for the process to start again.

An Occasion for the Arts returns to Merchants Square this year (October 5-6, 2024)…and so will we! Come see us at Williamsburg's premier Fall festival in booth #368, right in front of Lululemon! The entire weekend will feature 148 artists, live music, local food, interactive community activities and a youth art showcase.

We have been preparing a whole year for this event and have created 40+ individually hand-carved wooden bowls and vessels from trees we have acquired both locally and from places in which we've lived while we were in the Air Force (Alaska, South Dakota, Alabama, etc.).

We look forward to this every year and are excited to connect with you and share stories, tears, laughter, and hugs!

In these final days leading up to the show, we will be sharing what we have created and the stories that come with the trees we have been graced with. We love trees and their individual beauty, and we are honored to create art, from tree to table and from our hands to yours!
