Wax Painting Without the Fire Code Problem

If you've ever wanted to bring wax painting into a classroom, an apartment, or an assisted-living art program, the usual answer has been no. Hot encaustic needs a heat gun or a griddle. Cold wax needs solvents and real ventilation. Ceracolors needs neither — it's water-soluble, applied cold, no fumes.

If you teach or work in a space where solvents and open flame simply aren't an option, this might be worth a look.

Which Brush Actually Does What

Not sure which brush shape actually does what? A quick rundown:

Filbert — soft, rounded edges. Blending, and strokes that don't need a hard line.
Bright — confident rectangular strokes, sharp edges, good coverage.
Round — detail work and line variation, from hairline to full pressure.
Fan — texture. Foliage, hair, softening a transition without blending it away entirely.
Liner / Striper — fine, continuous lines. Long hair, thin strokes held over distance.
Mottler — laying in large, even washes. Grounds, priming, big flat passages.

What Made These Portraits Last Two Thousand Years?

Two thousand years ago, artists in Roman Egypt painted portraits meant to be bonded into mummy wrappings — pigment mixed with beeswax, applied while the wax was still workable, in some cases finished by fusing with heat. A number of these Fayum portraits survive today with color still startling for their age.

What do you think accounts for that kind of preservation compared to other ancient painting mediums from the same era? The binder, the application method, something else entirely?
