🍂 Exploring Nature in Fall 🍂
This storytime basket is filled with ideas for everyone from your littlest ones through older elementary age!
Remember, you don’t need all of these! Around 5-6 books is plenty depending on how often you plan to change them out. Choose books that fit your family and your children’s interests. And don’t feel like you need to buy everything new. Combine books you own, library finds, and a couple of new books. 📚
🍁 Explore the season: Early fall is a wonderful time to learn about changing leaves, trees, acorns, and woodland creatures. Fiction stories can also open the door to conversations about character, virtues, imagination, and the world around us.
📖 Mix fiction and nonfiction: Gail Gibbons has a wonderful collection of approachable nonfiction books for young children. Books like If You Find a Leaf and Look What I Did with a Leaf can also inspire creativity and hands on exploration.
Learning can happen through fiction, too! Books can naturally introduce counting, numbers, letters, and other early learning concepts without making reading feel like a lesson.
📚 Don’t forget a few longer stories to enjoy together! Books like Autumn Story or Heartbreak Hotel give you a chance to enjoy a story together over several days or weeks while building vocabulary, comprehension, and connection.
🍂 Add something fun! A sticker book, activity book, coloring book, or simple fall activity can give children another hands on way to enjoy the theme.
Storytime doesn’t have to be complicated. Grab a basket or bin, add a handful of books, and let your kids help choose what to read. Take a nature walk, collect leaves or acorns, talk about the illustrations, make some art, and read together. Let them pick the same favorite book 100 times if they want to! 💛
