Before you roll out, check the ride, the route, and the weather app.
Fast-changing conditions can turn a normal ride into a rough one if you leave with the wrong setup. A quick pre-ride check takes less than a minute, and it can save you from getting caught in rain, wind, traffic backups, or low visibility.
Here’s the simple checklist I use:
• Look at the sky, not just the forecast. If storms are building, ride earlier or choose a shorter loop.
• Check wind direction and speed. A strong headwind on the way out can feel fine when you’re fresh, then hit hard on the return.
• Scan the route for traffic changes. Construction, school pickup times, and event traffic can change everything fast.
• Test your brakes before you leave. Wet roads and sudden stops demand more control.
• Make sure your lights are charged and visible. If the ride might run long, don’t assume daylight will be enough.
• Set tire pressure for the surface you’re riding. A small adjustment can make a big difference in grip and comfort.
• Bring the basics. Water, phone, ID, and a flat kit if you’re riding farther than usual.
The biggest mistake riders make is planning for the ride they wanted, not the ride they’re actually getting.
That’s especially true here in South Florida, where weather can shift fast and traffic can go from calm to chaotic in minutes. A few extra checks before you leave keep the ride smoother, safer, and a lot less stressful.
Comment “CHECKLIST” and I’ll send you a quick pre-ride version you can save for later.
