"When I turned 13 years old, Dad gifted me with my very first guitar. The year was 1959, I was in the 7th grade at Jarman Junior High School in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and I was falling in love with folk music, thanks to the Kingston Trio.
Their ballad, Tom Dooley had just landed on the charts, and
I was an instant fan. There was something about the blend of their guitars and voices that struck a chord deep inside me. It was like I just didn't hear their music; I felt it. I felt it very deeply.
So much so, that I made myself a vow. I was going to be a folk singer when I got my own guitar ..."
