In landscaping you hear the term "vertical interest". These are plants that add height and draw your eye upward from the rest of the plants around them. Using these sorts of plants gives your landscape more depth and makes it much more interesting.

A great plant for this is the Will Fleming Yaupon Holly. This guy grows tall and narrow (12' H x 2' W). The narrow width makes it a good option near big, boring walls. At Youngs these are only 29.99 for a 4 ft tall plant.
