Cotton candy mountains
Start of fall and colors are changing, plants are unruly and bowing under the weight of their efforts, leaves falling already. We love this time best.

This year we’ve been seriously considering moving these large hydrangea for maybe an airier lacecap variety, but around now it looks so proud against our larger landscape. They’re some of the first shrubs we ever planted, already moved several times over the years, so we’ll see, but in the meantime, they take center stage.

High Five… Happy Birthday, Gardenheir!

Five years ago today, we launched Gardenheir.

As the story goes, it began with a garden in the Catskills, and two people who had very little idea what they were doing.

We had spent most of our adult lives in New York City, working across fashion, art, retail and education. When we bought our little house in Windham, we inherited several wooded acres of heavy clay, rocks, deer and very little level ground. We planted things where they didn’t want to grow, broke tools, read everything we could find, and (slowly) learned to pay attention.

Somewhere along the way, gardening changed the way we looked at things. It made us think differently about usefulness and beauty, traditions worth carrying forward, and the idea that none of us really owns a garden. We look after it for a while, learn from it, and eventually pass it along.

That idea became Gardenheir.

We couldn’t have imagined where it would take us, or how many people would become part of it. So today, mostly, we want to say thank you.

To everyone who has ordered something, visited us in Windham, opened an email, followed along, told a friend, shared our belief in dressing for the garden, or trusted us to send you a tool you’ll hopefully have for decades: thank you.

To the gardeners, makers, craftspeople and family businesses around the world who have shared their work and knowledge with us: thank you.

And especially to the people who have worked alongside us… we could never have built this without you. We think back to when it was just the two of us packing orders in our dining room and how lucky we are now to have a team we genuinely enjoy spending our days with.

Five years later, we’re still devoted amateur gardeners. Our garden is still changing. We’re still making mistakes, still learning. And Gardenheir, thankfully, still feels like something that’s growing rather than something that’s finished.

That’s probably the point… Long live the garden.

Sunday Devotion

My mom’s visiting! While we were toiling away with a little work this morning, we’d peek in as she was watching her obligatory Filipino Sunday mass on her phone. She’s tucked in the other side of the room, but it was such pretty light.

This week, Alan and I came to Key West with my entire family to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Somewhere between fishing in the flats, birthday cake, and celebrating their half a century of love, our flight home was canceled... so now we’re unexpectedly spending his birthday in Miami while we wait on the next flight home.
I’m a planner by nature, and this is not how I planned it.
But leave it Alan. Calm, determined and selfless. Every day a new reason to love you. You always make the most of it and remind me that wherever we are–it’s together. My parents are the same and I’m sure if I asked, their 50 years didn’t unfold exactly as they planned either. Their favorite days have been the ordinary ones–cancelled plans, gone fishing, laughing over dinner, celebrating family, and making the best of it..
The best part is always you. Happy Birthday, Alan. I love you.

Dog days of summer
