A note about holiday shopping this weekend…
Many of you know Small Business Saturday takes place this weekend, often overshadowed by the more popular Black Friday.
Every year, small businesses compete with multimillion dollar stores to stock their shelves, offer deals, do anything to get you in their doors.
The thing is, after the government shutdown in October, millions of people stripped of their ability to pay for food and now with affordable healthcare on the line—everyone is just trying to make the holidays special for their families.
I’m not going to pretend this year has been an easy one. In many ways, it’s been my most challenging yet. I have been very sick, unable to do even the most basic of tasks, which has very quickly put a lot of my priorities into perspective.
I started this store to be a place of community, and I have enjoyed finding ways to continue that even as an online store. Whether it’s through book club or pop up events, I’ve enjoyed seeing familiar faces and keeping in touch with all the return customers.
But with being so sick, those rare opportunities of community were no longer. I missed seeing you guys. I MISS seeing all your smiling faces. If this year has taught me anything, it’s that community cannot be replaced by anything. Not technology, not any other new product you may be sold. Nothing replaces supporting those who need it; making a meal, offering childcare, crafting together. There is nothing more important, especially now, than loving and caring for one another.
This is all to say, I won’t be doing anything for Small Business Saturday. This is not to say any other small businesses should do the same because not everyone is in the economic position to take a huge weekend off.
What I am saying is that if you are participating in the economic blackout this weekend, all power to you. If you are boycotting Black Friday, I fully support you. If you want to still support the shop and buy online this weekend, I would love that.
But I want to focus on something bigger: each other. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing this weekend, think of one thing you can do for someone else. And know that I’m thinking of you
