Historic 102 Walnut Restoration - Now Leasing Office and Retail Space

The age of the red brick of 102 Walnut tells a story of perseverance through the 20th century in the face of the Great Depression and a devastating fire. Ramer Candy Company operated in much of the building between 1894 and 1920. Through the Great Depression, it is unclear if any businesses operated in 102 Walnut until 1938 when Mitchell Knitting Mills moved in who was later purchased by Sears.

After that, many other tenants made use out of the building including an auto accessories manufacturer, National Chemicals, and a memorabilia manufacturer, until a fire broke out in the Northeast corner of the building, driving the current occupants out. Nearly a decade later, in 1968 Riverhaven School moved in, bringing life back into the building until the fall of 1990. The last major tenant to occupy the building was Intech, who moved out in 2015 leaving it vacant until restoration began in 2018.

With just shy of 150 years of history, 102 Walnut has seen Winona, MN grow into the city it is today. The retail and commercial tenants that make 102 Walnut their home will be adding another chapter to the rich history of this building.

102 Walnut was first constructed in 1870 and was primarily occupied by Charles Miller Grocery. Historic records claim that 102 Walnut was one of the most prominent and architecturally beautiful buildings in Winona at the time.

The Ramer Candy Company eventually took over the building in 1894 and bloomed into a giant success by the turn of the century. The candy company enjoyed business in Winona from 1894 to 1920. During that time, other tenants included a tea company, mercantile business, and even housed an indoor baseball season in 1898.
