This Jalisco male figure was found in West Mexico and dates to 200-600 AD. It measures at a large 24 x 10 cm (12 x 5 in) at the hips. When you talk of Guadalajara, you are essentially talking about the 450 years of history which have made it what it is now. It is essential to know a bit about the past in order to live Guadalajara's present to the full.

The area of Jalisco was inhabited by various indigenous groups, up until the conquest. Today, Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco, the second largest and most important city in the country. It has around six million inhabitants, and is a large metropolis, with every feature which a cosmopolitan city should have.

The term “quartz” comes from the Greek word for “ice.” Ancient Greek philosophers like Theophrastus believed that the transparent stone was a form of permanent ice, so cold, it kept from thawing. Size is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter and 2 3/4 inches tall. The bowl weighs at 151 grams.

A terracotta bowl from around 2500 BC from the Nal culture of the Indus Valley shows early skill in pottery-making. It was made by hand from local clay, fired, and usually covered with a red surface and simple black painted designs like lines, shapes, or plant patterns. The bowl’s shallow shape suggests it was used in daily life, such as for holding or serving food. At the same time, its decoration shows that people valued beauty as well as usefulness, reflecting the artistic and cultural traditions of the Nal culture.

Gran Design

Gran Coclé is an archaeological culture area in pre-Columbian Central America coinciding with the modern-day Panamanian province of Coclé. It consisted of a number of identifiable native cultures, which archaeologists have loosely designated by pottery style.

Archaeologists working at intervals since the 1920s have uncovered ruins and burials which contain striking artifacts. These include worked gold and other metals, carved bone, shell, and whale ivory, textiles, jewelry with semi-precious stones, and beautifully painted pottery. Coclé gold work was traded throughout the region, and has been found as far away as Chichen Itza in Yucatán, Mexico. The large collection of Coclé pre-historic pottery is notable for strong structural design and the use of fish, bird, animal and human figures as decoration.

Agatized Fossil Coral is Florida's state stone. They are found in ancient ocean beds, where silica rich groundwater has percolated through them and over time has replaced it's calcium carbonate skeleton with a hard variety of Chalcedony.

It is about 38-25 million years old and from the Oligocene-Miocene period.

Much of these fossils have been found in the Tampa Bay area, near Ballast Point. We have this specimen in the shop now. DM for details.
