A Tiffany Studios three light “Newel Post” table lamp. Circuit 1900 to 1920 featuring three Favril glass pulled feather leaf pattern shades by Quezal art glass of Brooklyn New York, 1901 to 1924. The base signed Tiffany Studios, New York and the shades etched Quezal.

The Newel Post designation comes from the distinctive central bronze form: a ribbed circular foot, tall central post, and three organically curving arms, with the decorative finial at the top. It is one of Tiffany Studios’ most recognizable early table-lamp forms.

The Quezal Art Glass and Decorating Company was organized by Martin Bach, Sr., and Thomas Johnson in February 1901. Bach, a French immigrant, had been a formula mixer for Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Corona, New York, glass factory. Johnson, a skilled glassblower, had also been employed by Tiffany. The separate departures of the two men from Tiffany were due to their individual difficulties with the management. It took the knowledge and expertise of both men to form their new glass factory, located on Fresh Pond Road and Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

The name “Quezal” was registered as a trademark on October 28, 1902. Quezal is actually an alternate spelling for the name of the Guatemalan sun bird, the quetzal. The quetzal bird has plumage of brilliant metallic green, with a crimson breast and a crown of iridescent yellow and green. The legendary bird, whose feathers had once decorated the ceremonial robes of the Aztecs, was illustrated on Quezal’s letterhead as the company trademark and utilized in advertising, which stated, “all our product is reproduced in the beautiful colorings of the Quezal Bird.”

The bronze Tiffany studios lamp retains its original patinated surface and is properly rewired.

A large druggist trade sign of fabulous form and artistic merit. These 3 dimensional signs were once common place in early 20th century American towns and cities. Every tradesmen had a large and often times shiny gilded sign of his trade to attract his clientele.

This particular trade sign composed of a large mortar and pestle (the known object for a druggist) dates to the early 20th Century. The mortar and pestle is gold gilded that it might be seen from long distances and at nighttime, helping it stand out among the signs of the times. The ‘R’ to signify that the proprietor is a licensed drug to dispense prescription medication.

An excerpt from The Art of Enterprise by Peter C.Welsh
“Frank Weitenkampf wrote an article which, in 1890, the New York Times published, Weitenkampf informed his readers that the “sculptor in wood” had a large clientel: “Chiropodists want large white or felt feet to display before their doors, glove sellers hang up wooden gloved hands as a sign of their calling, and livery-stable owners call for heads of horses.” Most extraordinary of all, the Times had located a firm that dealt in woolen rugs which “had a figure of a rugman, nine feet high, placed on top of its building.”
Nearly forty years later, John L. Morrison, then editor of the Greenville, Pennsylvania Record Argus, writing in Scribner’s Magazine added further testimony to the fact that scarcely a trade or craft was without its three-dimensional attention-getter. In the October issue of 1928 he wrote: “Bull’s head or steer horns proclaimed the butcher’s-shop, menacing bears, furriers’ showrooms, and no saddlery-shop sidewalk was without its piebald or calico horse.” Well into the 20th century, in cities, towns and villages, the shopper could see “watches, boots, and shocking stockinged legs” as well as a gigantic hat,” which called attention to “the hatter’s place of business.”
