For Tristan Nelson the reward of farming goes far beyond the harvest.

He enjoys the challenge of working the ground, spending his days outdoors and seeing the transformation that takes place throughout the season. There’s a sense of accomplishment in looking back at the end of the year and seeing the results of months of hard work, healthy crops, strong yields and a successful harvest.

But for Tristan, success is about more than what comes off the field. It’s about the people alongside him and being able to support the families and businesses that make California rice possible.

As Tristan puts it, “Thank you. Eating the rice we grow supports so many families that produce it. It’s not just the farmer—it’s the help on the farm, the entire team at Grow West, crop dusting businesses, trucking companies, rice dryers and rice mills. It’s an entire community of people supported by this crop of rice… Please keep eating it—eat more.”

Fields of gold are making their annual return...it must be sunflower season!🌻
These cheerful blooms are a summertime favorite and an important part of California agriculture, grown for both seeds and oil.

If you find yourself stopping to admire the fields, please do so respectfully. Enjoy the view, snap a photo from the edges and help protect these beautiful blooms and the farms that grow them.

🐛 What's hiding in your alfalfa?

Sweep net monitoring is revealing armyworms, alfalfa caterpillars and other pests in fields right now. These insects can quickly impact yield and forage quality, making regular scouting an important part of your management program. A few sweeps through the canopy can provide valuable insight into pest pressure, beneficial insect activity and whether action may be needed before populations reach damaging levels.

These photos are a great reminder that what's happening in your field isn't always visible from the pickup window. If you're seeing feeding, whitecaps, or increased moth and butterfly activity, now is the time to get out the sweep net. The best management decisions start with good field scouting.

If you're finding worms in your sweeps connect with your Grow West PCA to discuss field conditions, review pest thresholds and determine the best course of action.

For Tristan Nelson, farming is anything but predictable and that's exactly what he loves about it.🚜

A third-generation farmer at Nelson Family Farms in Pleasant Grove, California, Tristan has spent more than 20 years growing medium grain rice. While every season brings its share of risk, it's the rhythm of the year that keeps him coming back. Planting in the spring, long days during spray season, preparing equipment through the summer and harvest in the fall.

No two days look the same. The work is driven by the weather, the season and whatever challenges the day may bring. From fixing equipment to preparing for the next crop season, farming requires adaptability, dedication and a passion for the process.

🌾 Meet Tristan Nelson and learn what inspires him to continue his family's farming legacy in the latest episode of Meet the Farmer Behind Your Food.

👉 Stay tuned for the next episode featuring Nelson Family Farms, where Tristan shares the passion that drives him every day on the farm.

It’s National Olive Day a great time to recognize one of California’s signature crops. 🫒

Northern California plays a key role in olive production, with ideal growing conditions that support both table olives and high-quality olive oil. California produces the majority of the olives grown in the United States, and much of that comes from right here in the Central Valley.

From orchard to bottle, olives are a great example of the care and consistency it takes to grow a crop season after season. Today’s a good day to appreciate everything behind it!

With the recent rain and temperatures quickly climbing, conditions are becoming favorable for powdery mildew pressure in vineyards across Northern California. Staying ahead of disease pressure with a strong fungicide program and timely applications can help protect vine health and fruit quality through the season. A little prevention now can help avoid bigger challenges later.

👉 Reach out to your Grow West PCA to talk through the best disease management plan for your vineyard this season.

On this Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the freedoms we are grateful for each day, including the ability to work the land, support our communities and continue the legacy of agriculture.

From all of us at Grow West, we extend our deepest gratitude and respect.

It’s National Fruit and Vegetable Day! A good reminder of just how much is grown right here in Northern California. 🍅🫑🌽

From almonds, tomatoes, and walnuts to melons, rice, and leafy greens, this region produces a wide variety of crops that help feed communities across the state and beyond. In fact, California grows more than a third of the country’s vegetables and over two-thirds of its fruits and nuts.

It all starts in the field, with growers and crops that keep things moving season after season. Today’s a great day to appreciate everything that comes out of it!
