JUST IN - From day to day, we never know what kind of vintage gear that's gonna show up at our door. Yesterday, a gentleman drove up from Columbus and sold us this nice TECHNICS 1700 reel-to-reel. It was purchased new by the seller. He also had the original dust cover and two TECHNICS take up reels. It needs cleaned and serviced still, but I'm currently playing it at our store. -Brian

ALTEC VOICE OF THE THEATRE A-5 SPEAKER (SINGLE) - Some years ago, we traveled to South Charleston, WV in order to purchase 3 ALTEC A-5 theatre speakers. Not long ago, 2 of them sold but we still have one left. It's all original with the LANSING 515C 15 inch woofer, 805B horn and 288-16K High Frequency Driver. $2500 --- Below is an excerpt from my original post back when we purchased all 3 speakers. The last 3 photos are from the original post, as well. -Brian

--- Here's a little history behind these VOICE OF THE THEATRE speakers. These speakers came out of the Capitol Theatre in downtown Charleston, WV. The Capitol Theatre was built in 1912. It was originally used for plays etc., then it was used for movies sometime in the 50s. These ALTEC speakers, likely, have been in the theatre since the late 50s. The theatre went out of business in the 70s. It sat vacant for many years. The last movie to be shown there was the premier of Star Wars. --- There were 3 speakers on the stage. I was told that one was used for right channel, one for left and one was sort of a center channel. They're not in pristine condition, but they're all original. I like the fact, too, that I know the history behind them. --- February 2019

STORE MONO McINTOSH/ALTEC SYSTEM - Recently, I put together this particular tube mono system at the store. A few of our regular customers have heard this combination. The other day, I played a mono vinyl pressing of Frank Sinatra. One customer just stood there in disbelief. He was overwhelmed at the clarity and depth of the recording. He said, "it just sounds like frank is singing right here in this room". --- I'll be playing/auditioning this all tube mono audio system all this weekend. Stop by and let me demonstrate a couple of Jazz mono pressings on the MICRO-TRAK turntable. Even if you have no interest in buying a mono setup, come by and audition this system anyway... just to see what all of the rave about mono music is all about. -Brian

ROAD TRIP / MENTOR, OH - Today, I went up to Mentor (by Lake Erie) and purchased a good size collection of vintage McINTOSH pieces. This particular older gentleman had been collecting these pieces through the years, but decided to let them go because he doesn't use them much anymore. --- All of the tube gear was hooked up together. He auditioned these pieces for me (MPI-3, MR-65, C-20, MC-40s & MC-30). Underneath a thin layer of dust, these tube items are in excellent condition. The solid state equipment all need serviced, except for the mint MR-77 tuner. I was serviced by Audio Classics. --- This was a great haul with so many excellent vintage pieces. Here's a few quick photos of the items I purchased today. -Brian

LITTLE THINGS MEAN ALOT - A few weeks ago, a customer came in the store asking for a price on recovering his speaker grills. After looking at the size and such, I told him that it would be around $200. He quickly replied (in a polite way), "what, two hundred dollars?!" I explained to him how that there would be a considerable amount of time involved in this project, and that the bulk of the price wasn't in the material but in the labor. He thought it over for a short bit, then sort of reluctantly agreed to do it. --- He picked the speaker covers up this past Saturday morning. Before he paid the balance of the bill, I showed him the grills and said, "what do you think"? As he was looking at the finished product, there was silence for a short space. Then he said, "these look amazing. How did the tech get the old speaker logos off of the bad material and place them on the new? I didn't think that he'd be able to do that". --- After the customer went home, he called me back a few hours later. When I answered the phone, he introduced himself as the individual who picked up the speaker grills earlier in the day. He went on to say how that he wanted to thank us for the work that we did for him. He said, "the grills look great on my speakers. The $200 was well spent." Afterwards he said, "that's all I want, just to say thanks... again". --- This may seem to be a LITTLE THING, but it really isn't. In fact, it sort of made my day, to know that someone would be so thoughtful to call back and just say "thanks once again for the repair". It's true... LITTLE THINGS MEAN ALOT. -Brian
