A 400-year-old urban forest in the middle of Lima
In San Isidro, surrounded by residential streets and embassies, there is a place that feels completely different from the rhythm of the city: El Olivar Urban Forest. It’s not just a nice park to walk through. It is actually one of the oldest historic green spaces in Lima and one of the most important green lungs in the district.
The forest covers about 10 hectares and is home to nearly two thousand trees, most of them centuries-old olive trees that are more than 300 years old. The origin of this place is very different from most urban parks. In the 16th century it was not designed for recreation, but as an agricultural plantation. The first olive trees were brought from Seville around 1560 by Antonio de Rivera during the colonial period. Over time, the city grew around this plantation, and what was once farmland eventually became a historic urban forest.
Walking through El Olivar feels different from walking through a typical park. The paths are surrounded by old olive trees that create deep shade and a quiet atmosphere. Between the trees you can see more than twenty species of birds that live in the area, which makes the environment surprisingly calm even though it’s right in the middle of San Isidro.
In the center of the forest there is a lagoon where koi fish and turtles live, one of the most photographed spots in the area. Around the forest you can also find several cultural spaces in the district, including the Municipal Library, the Chamber Theater, the El Olivar Cultural Center, and the Marina Núñez del Prado Museum House. Because of this, the forest works not only as a green area, but also as an active cultural space within the city.
El Olivar was declared a National Monument in 1959 in order to protect its historical and botanical value. Today it remains one of the few places in Lima where you can still experience a landscape that preserves part of the city’s colonial history.
Besides its historical importance, it is also a very accessible place to visit. Entry is free and open 24 hours a day, and the forest includes bike paths, walking trails, picnic areas, a dog park, public restrooms, and wheelchair-accessible paths.
The forest does not have a single entrance since it covers several blocks of the district, but one of the most recognizable reference points is the Cultural Center area located at 455 La RepĂşblica Street in San Isidro.
Today, more than just a park, El Olivar works as a small ecosystem inside Lima. A place where history, nature, and city life come together, and where it’s always worth slowing down for a walk or simply sitting under one of its centuries-old olive trees.
