This beautiful Memorial Day weekend weather was put to good use here at Homestead BS. 🌱
We got several rows of plants moved out into the garden, started several more trays of seedlings, and our Jerusalem artichokes are doing great in their bucket setup. We even finished installing some new brick-outlined herb gardens around the greenhouse.
Little by little, it’s all starting to come together. 💪🐓🌿

Today was a hot one. Perfect for staying busy in the shade. So we worked on a small but giantly impact full project we've been talking about awhile now. If you've ever toured the shaded camping area of our property you've seen the tiny spring fed creek that runs along the back. Today we took a shovel and a cooler and added in the first of several planned water catchment ponds. It will take a few days to complete filling, but its about 10' long 4' wide how deep it is will be determined once the water overflows the pile of dirt that came out of the hole creating a temporary dam. But it is about 12" deep in this photo. Expect it to come up about 24" more. Things are always changing here.

This weekend out on the trail, we got to talking about homestead life, staying organized, and trying to keep all the moving parts on track. I mentioned that I use a homestead planner to help manage things, and it honestly never occurred to me that these aren’t exactly common knowledge to everyone.
Now, this isn’t a perfect book, and I’m sure there are better ones out there. It’s also pretty generalized since it’s not written for any one specific area or property. But that’s kind of the point — it gives you a solid reference point and a framework to start building from.
Not every section applies to us here at Homestead BS, and I doubt any single planner would perfectly fit every homestead. But it does give you a place to organize ideas, keep notes specific to your property, and slowly build out a more personalized binder or system that actually works for your lifestyle.
So I figured I’d throw this out there in case it helps somebody else get a little more organized and intentional with their homestead journey.

Rainy weather called for comfort food. 🌧️🔥
Tonight’s experiment turned into an absolute winner: ☕ Coffee-Rubbed Pork & Bean Stew
Smoky, hearty, rich broth, tender pork, mushrooms, beans, apples, and a little Homestead BS creativity thrown in for good measure.
Cooked entirely in the Instant Pot(For convenience, if you've got the time and energy bust out that cast iron skillet, do your searing in there and add it all back into the instapot, worth it trust me 😉)while the rain hammered the homestead.

Who would’ve guessed coffee rubbed pork makes such an incredible stew? 🤘

Ever see some rusty old treasure rotting away and think… “Yeah, I can make that useful again”?
Helping a friend clean up some stuff and this old cement mixer was sitting there in the “non-working junk” pile. Most people see clutter. Around Homestead BS, we see opportunity. 🔥
This thing is about to become one of the handiest tools on the homestead. We mix our own feed, constantly have projects going, and we already have one upcoming build that’s going to require mixing roughly 800 lbs of concrete for a counterweight setup. 💪
Still needs a good cleanup and a little love… but man, talk about an awesome addition to the toolbox.
One man’s scrap pile is another homesteader’s new favorite piece of equipment. 😂
