A few years ago I got really excited about the idea of changing peoples perspectives on the banjo, I truly believe it to be misunderstood. For in example, did you know when you strum the banjo it’s a major chord, without pressing down on any of the strings? And by the way did you even know you can strum a banjo?

This excitement led me to make The Friendly Banjo, a 3-string, color-coded banjo meant to be a family’s first string instrument. Every banjo I make is made with local maple in Massachusetts, comes with a 1-year warranty, and dozens of lessons. I truly love the banjo, and now you and your children can see just what got me so passionate all those years ago.

Why do I build banjos for kids? Because the power of music is way too important not to gift to those we love.

A banjo gives young hands a real way to create, find rhythm, and it can bring families closer through learning something new and fun together.

Watch the latest episode of the Manufacturing Report Podcast where I talk with Scott about my unique story of building a banjo company.

What does it take to leave everything behind and build something in America from the ground up? 🪕🇺🇸

Zack Munsell had no woodworking background and was afraid of power tools. But he had an idea: create an affordable, easy to play banjo that could introduce more kids and beginners to making music.

On a brand new episode of The Manufacturing Report, AAM President Scott Paul talks with the founder of Friendly Banjos about his cross country journey learning from American banjo makers, partnering with Massachusetts based Magic Fluke to manufacture his instruments with locally sourced materials, going viral on TikTok, and turning an idea into an American made business.

It's a story about taking a chance, learning a craft, and finding purpose along the way. 🪕

I designed this banjo and a unique learning system to make making music at home and in the classroom feel a lot more… well… friendly.

Not everyone learns the same way, but everyone deserves the opportunity to play music. The Friendly Banjo is designed to remove a lot of the early friction points that can make picking up a string instrument feel intimidating for students, young and old.
Low string height. Gentle nylon strings. A lightweight, durable design. And a color- and shape-coded learning system built right into the instrument and all of our teaching materials.

It’s a little banjo designed to help you get past the frustration and get straight to the fun of making music together.

What can’t this little banjo do?
And for that matter, what can’t you?
