The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs, Pennsylvania advises that now and into the fall is a great time to plant hostas. The advantage of planting now is that the hosta still has plenty of time to root into the ground. Additionally, when it comes up next spring the hostas will look like established plants and they should also begin producing new leaves and possibly more eyes.

At The Hosta Hideaway we have 100's of varieties of hostas for sale including 'Praying Hands' which is in bloom and is looking especially nice! We also just received a new shipment of statuary and so we have a great selection of statuary, fountains, lanterns, benches, figural pieces and garden art for sale. And yesterday, one of our favorite fountains with Van Gogh's 'Stary Night' as part of the scenery, went to a new home (Thank you!). If you like this fountain we can order you one for next spring. So come for a visit!

This week's featured hosta at The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs, Pennsylvania is Waterslide, a fantastic medium blue hosta that has very wavy, ruffled leaves with heavy substance, and the blue leaves hold their color for most of the season. 'Waterslide' is a vigorous grower that forms a beautifully shaped clump and it produces a gorgeous cluster of deep lavender flowers that form at the leaf line mid summer. Although there are plenty of blue hostas that we recommend including 'Halcyon', 'Tears in Heaven', Blue Angel', Blue Mouse Ears' and ''Abiqua Drinking Gourd' to name a few, 'Waterslide is a must because of its uniquely beautiful shape and lovely flower.

And you can get all of the Hostas mentioned in this post along with hundreds of other varieties at The Hosta Hideaway, and we carry a fantastic selection of statuary, fountains, benches, birdbaths, pagodas and garden art for your landscape. Speaking of Hostas: And Japanese styled gardens. The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs PA recognizes Japanese gardens as some of the most beautiful and peaceful gardens to enjoy. And since hostas are native to Japan, it is typical to see hostas in Japanese gardens.

However, developing your own Japanese garden takes significant skill, time, energy, and resources. But knowing the right elements to use in creating a Japanese inspired space can help in developing uniqueness in your garden that at least has the style of a more traditional Japanese oasis. Common elements in Japanese gardens include water features such as fountains, ponds, and streams, and gravel, stone, and rocks, specific architecture such as bridges, stone-lanterns, pagodas, statues, benches, fences, strolling paths and gates, and plants such as hostas, Japanese maples and pines, bamboo, moss, and flowers. The Japanese also utilize the natural contours of the landscape to develop flow and unique spaces.

Hostas are a natural plant selection for a Japanese garden because the plants are thought to have originated in the mountain slopes of Japan. And, according to the Seattle Japanese Garden website, hosta leaves are also represented in Japanese art and are displayed in Japanese architecture and landscape structures. Additionally, the hosta’s distinct foliage and flowers provide color and beauty for the Japanese garden throughout the growing season. The bell-shaped blooms also attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees, an important aspect of oriental gardening.

Adding a few elements from a Japanese garden can help create unique scenery in your garden where you can find peace and tranquility. Here at The Hosta Hideaway, we can help you to design a garden utilizing aspects from Japanese gardens that we carry in stock such as hostas since we have over 400 varieties for sale. And you can also choose from our inventory of statuary, lanterns, pagodas, benches, fountains, planters, and other unique garden finds.

Not every critter in the garden is a pest. At The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs, Pennsylvania, growing up i did not think i would sing the praises of skunks in the garden. However, each year I like to remind our customers of the benefits of skunks.

Of course there are obvious reasons why many gardeners may not like skunks, such as the smell and the possibility of you or your pet startling a skunk and getting sprayed. And skunks are omnivorous, and therefore they eat both plants and animals, depending on the season. Although they can disturb your plants when digging for food, skunks tend to like to eat berries, buds and grasses more than munching on hostas.

However, the benefit of skunks for the garden far outweighs the challenges. The good news is that skunks eat harmful bugs such as beetles, grasshoppers, cutworms, grubs, wasps, and other insects and larvae. As an example of the destructive nature of these insects, grubs can damage plant roots and ground wasps can be dangerous, especially if you disturb their nests. Even if you do not realize it, you may have seen the benefit of a skunk in the garden when you see small holes in the lawn where a skunk has dug out grubs, or where you spot parts of a ground wasp nest that was dug up and destroyed by a skunk that ate the wasp larva.

And what is most surprizing and beneficial is that skunks eat small rodents such as moles, mice, and best of all for the hosta garden, voles. And anyone with a hosta garden appreciates anything that can eradicate voles.

The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs, PA has over 400 varieties of hostas for sale, and a large selection of statuary, lanterns, pagodas, benches, fountains, planters, and other unique garden finds for your landscape. We also presently have 'Hardy Begonias, Perilla, and 'Painter's Palette for sale. And we have recently added extensively to the statuary area, and we are always adding new hostas.
