A near fine copy, with minor edge wear to the cloth and faint toning to the top edge; internally clean and tight. Housed in a near fine dust jacket showing light rubbing and a touch of edgewear, without significant loss or restoration.

Barr’s first and best-known work of fiction, a controversial and stylistically eccentric science fiction novel depicting a hierarchical interstellar society marked by decadence and coercion. Long obscure, the book has gained significant notoriety in recent years due to its thematic parallels to later real-world events and its connection to the author’s tenure as headmaster of the Dalton School, where Jeffrey Epstein was later employed and possibly hired by the Barr.

Now increasingly scarce in collectible condition, particularly in original jacket, with most surviving copies ex-library or well worn. A cult science-fiction novel whose market has been renewed following the discovery of the JE connection. Problem is they are super scarce in collectible condition! This one is quite handsome!

Part II of the Augusta/Cormac archive being catalogued. A wonderful inscription by author to the subject of the infamous Vanity Fair article. A top tier association copy written before McCarthy experienced commercial success or won any major award.

According to the Vanity Fair article, Augusta Britt was the muse that nobody outside McCarthy’s inner circle knew about. A relationship that began when Britt was a runaway teenager and McCarthy was 42. She details much of that early time with McCarthy in the article but what we see is evidence from 1990 that McCarthy still send gifts to her and their relationship endured. Just a fantastic piece of literary history here.

Donna Tartt, The Secret History & The Little Friend. London: Bloomsbury, 2009. Signed Limited Edition, number 782 of 1000 signed sets which includes a decorative slipcase, with both volumes being signed on a publisher’s signed and numbered tipped in page.
A beautiful set, both volumes bound in black paper boards with gorgeous silver gilt details to the spine and solid gilt to the text block. Black ribbon bookmark. Decorative endpapers. The cloth slipcase features beautifully designed silver gilt artwork. Both books are in fine condition and the rather fragile jackets are now housed in new archival mylar. The slipcase is in at least VG or better condition with some dings and scuffs but otherwise presents very well.
The Pulitzer Prize winning author’s first two novels. She would win for her third novel, The Goldfinch in 2013. A fantastic numbered set and includes not one but two signatures from the author!

The recipient, Augusta Britt is among the most significant and documented associations in the entire cannon of McCarthy Collectibles. According to Vincenzo Barney in his 2024 Vanity Fair, McCarthy and Britt met in 1976 when Britt was 16 and McCarthy was 42 and the two maintained a relationship and bond that lasted decades. Britt has stated that she believes many of McCarthy’s important characters were inspired by her, including figures in All the Pretty Horses and No Country for Old Men. Britt guarded her identity and the pair’s relationship closely until she revealed herself to be McCarthy’s “secret muse”. Her emergence as a named, documented and publicly recogzined figure in McCarthy’s life and creative world has transformed association copies inscribed to her (this is just the second to come to light) into objects of the highest literary-historical significance. This is not a peripheral association. Britt is by any measure, central to McCarthy’s biography and to the genesis of his mature work.

Of the Ecco Press publications, this is by far the most difficult to obtain and few copies were inscribed making this a Top Tier item.
Provenance: Recovered from a repossessed storage locker in Tucson, AZ. This item is accompanied by an envelope and Christmas card from Britt’s parents.
