Let’s talk about community. About people. Who are the people around you?
Tonight, we went to DreamWrights Center for Community Arts to see performances from the Fable Festival, featuring works written by local playwrights, as well as Mother Goosed.
The writers were local. The actors—if not all, then certainly most—were local. So were the people handling the sound, production, costumes, sets and countless other details that bring live theater to life. And many of those involved in all positions were young people.
While talking with the woman seated beside me, she casually shared that her daughter had written one of the evening’s plays. What are the odds? Did I mention her daughter is only 14?
Her name is Sadie Jarmer, and she wrote Bee Out of the Box. It was an adorable play with a very real and meaningful message. Wonderful job, Sadie!
And here’s another community connection: Sadie’s mom owns a small business called My Once Upon a Plot Twist. She transformed a bus into a traveling romance bookstore—with attitude!
We enjoyed all of the evening’s plays and performances, and we appreciated the incredible work of everyone both in the spotlight as well as behind the scenes. What a wonderful job by all involved!
So, I’ll ask again: Who are the people around you? Do you know?
We are surrounded by dreamers, artists, writers, actors, creators, givers and explorers. They are the fabric of York, and they are all around us—but do we take the time to see them?
Each one of us brings a different talent, story and gift. When those individual pieces come together, they create the colorful, beautifully imperfect quilt we call community.
DreamWrights is a beautiful place where youth and adults can discover their gifts, follow their dreams and find the courage to soar. It’s also a reminder that whether someone is standing in the spotlight or working quietly behind the scenes, every role matters. Isn’t that true everywhere?
As William Shakespeare wrote, “All the world’s a stage.” If so, York is filled with an incredible cast of people, each bringing something uniquely their own.
Our part is to notice them, encourage them and show up for them—while also discovering what we ourselves can contribute.
Because community isn’t simply where we live. It’s what we create when we recognize one another’s gifts and work together toward something bigger than ourselves.
Tonight, DreamWrights gave us a beautiful example of what that can look like. Let’s keep dreaming, inspiring, teaching, listening, learning and growing—together.
