Since 1988, the Friends have been dedicated to the promotion, improvement and preservation of Fellows Riverside Gardens, a free public garden, through advocacy and fundraising. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, the Friends are independent of the Gardens and Mill Creek MetroParks, yet work in steady collaboration with them to sponsor events, programs, and to fund large-scale garden projects. The contributions of time and energy on committees and projects are an integral part of Friends giving.

The Friends of Fellows Horticulture Team is excited to bring the owners of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs to the Davis Education Center on Tuesday September 29 for TWO FREE LECTURES.

Brent and Becky Heath, work on their 28-acre farm in Gloucester, Virginia. They are proud flower bulb suppliers, garden writers, photographers, lecturers, consultants, and educators. They are passionate about preserving the ecosystems in the Chesapeake Bay area. Over 8 acres of their property is devoted to educational gardens where they invite visitors to learn more about sustainable gardening.

2 p.m. Lecture: Bulbs as Companion Plants
Whether you are planning to plant bulbs in a fresh, newly prepared empty garden, or whether you are adding them to an already existing one, Brent and Becky Heath, 3rd generation bulb growers and owners of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs from Gloucester, Virginia, will have the answers for you! With exquisite slides illustrating the seminar, they will introduce you to the best of the best…..the right bulbs for the right spots. They’ll show you how to combine bulbs, perennials, annuals, ground covers and flowering shrubs that will create just the feeling you want to generate for three seasons in your garden. After seeing and experiencing this seminar, you’ll leave with information and inspiration to produce a garden that you, your neighbors, and friends will enjoy all year.

5:30 p.m. FREE Lecture: Pest Resistant Bulbs
Come and learn about the kinds of flower bulbs that naturally resist the attacks of such critters as deer, rabbits, squirrels, voles and insects. Also learn how to help to make edible bulbs like lilies, tulips and crocus more pest resistant with an assortment of remedies, which make the bulbs or leaves taste or smell bad to foraging critters. Also learn how to create physical barriers to thwart the ‘bulb monsters’ and keep them at bay. Let’s try some of these solutions to help us enjoy our flowers and make the world a happier, more beautiful place.

NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED but we do ask that you let us know how many in your group are coming at [email protected] so we can plan seating.

Living Floral Arrangements with Layers of Bulbs

The Horticulture Committee of Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens is pleased to present the following container workshop: Living Floral Arrangements with Layers of Bulbs.

We are excited to bring Brent Heath from Brent and Becky’s Bulbs in Gloucester Virginia to speak about growing flowering bulbs. We all smile when we receive a floral arrangement. However, that smile will return many times when we realize that the flowers from this workshop will come from live bulbs and will last 2 to 3 times longer than cut flowers. Then they can often be recycled into the garden after danger of hard freeze. During this hands on workshop you will learn about a variety of flowering bulbs. Each participant will plant and then take home a 12” pot filled with bulbs. You will have the choice of having them bloom in December or learn how to keep them dormant until Spring.

The Horticulture Committee of Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens is pleased to present the following class to be given by Christine Crosby - The Greatness of Garlic in the Garden!

Garlic is one of the easiest vegetables to grow; it would benefit every gardener to include a small plot of garlic in the garden. This class is very comprehensive, including everything from the history of garlic, to how to grow and care for it through each of the seasons. You’ll learn the difference between hard neck and soft neck varieties, which is best grown in our planting zone, and how to find good seed garlic to plant. You’ll also learn how to cure garlic for winter storage. Participants will have a chance to taste foods made with garlic scapes, garlic cloves, and black garlic. As long as Mother Nature cooperates, each person will also go home with a bulb or two to try and plant.
