📚 AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: LAYDEE LATRAYAL

It was a pleasure having author Laydee Latrayal stop by Black Stone!

Her book, I Fell in Love with Drama, takes readers through the painful side of love, recognizing the warning signs of an abusive relationship, finding your worth, and having the strength to reclaim your life.

This is more than a story about falling in love with the wrong person. It's about knowing when to choose yourself.

Thank you, Laydee Latrayal, for sharing your work with us and trusting Black Stone to help get your story into more hands.

Her book is available NOW in-store and online at Black Stone!

Last Saturday we hosted historian Talitha LeFlouria’s book launch of her outstanding work “Searching for Jane Crow: Black Women and Mass Incarceration in America from the Auction Block to the Cell Block.”

We had a great turnout even with a last-minute location change due to power outage at YDL-Superior. She was an excellent speaker and community showed up and brought their support! Her book can still be purchased online.

This is Black Stone. 🖤

Real customers. Real supporters. Real people who have worn Black Stone and represented us throughout the years.

Looking back at some of these photos reminds us that Black Stone Merch has always been about more than putting a logo on a shirt. It’s about the people who choose to wear it, support us, tell somebody about us, and continue showing up.

As we bring Black Stone Merch back to the forefront, you’ll be seeing more familiar faces—and hopefully some new ones too.

Now it’s your turn to represent.

A Special Visit at Black Stone 📚🖤

We had the pleasure of welcoming Scott Reisfield to Black Stone today, and what started as a visit quickly became a great conversation about history, family, culture, and the stories that connect us.

Scott shared that Greta Garbo was his great-aunt, giving him a personal connection to the woman and legacy behind his book, Greta Garbo and the Rise of the Modern Woman. Hearing some of that history firsthand made the conversation even more meaningful.

At Black Stone, our roots matter—and so does the world those roots allow us to reach. We believe a bookstore should be a place where culture is celebrated, history is explored, and good stories bring people to the same table.

We’re grateful Scott stopped by and shared a little of his story with us.

📖 Greta Garbo and the Rise of the Modern Woman is available now in store and online at Black Stone.

Different stories. Shared shelves. One community. 🖤

Don't miss! This Saturday, September 5 at 1pm at the Ypsilanti District Library-Superior location. Dr. Talitha L. LeFlouria, an Ypsilanti native and award-winning historian, will present her newest book, "Searching for Jane Crow: Black Women and Mass Incarceration in America From the Auction Block to the Cell Block."

Dr. LeFlouria tells a new origin story of mass incarceration, revealing that the system did not begin with the War on Drugs but with slavery. Placing Black women at the center of the nation's long carceral history, she exposes how the architecture of today's punitive system was designed to safeguard slavery and the profits it generated—a legacy that remains.

Black Stone Bookstore & Cultural Center currently has books in the store and will have books available for purchase at the event.

"Paradigm-shifting...This book ought to change forever how the history of mass incarceration is told." —Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness

Dr. LeFlouria is one of the nation’s leading authorities on the history of Black women, mass incarceration, and the legacies of American slavery. She is an associate professor of history at The University of Texas at Austin and author of the multi-award-winning book, Chained in Silence. She has received numerous awards including an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Ms. Magazine, The Root, and Vox.

Yesterday was everything Black Stone stands for. ❤️📚

To everyone who joined us for Valencia Martin's Unbound book signing—thank you.

Seeing our bookstore filled with readers, conversation, laughter, hugs, and a shared love of literature reminded us why Black Stone exists. Every event is about more than selling books—it's about creating a space where stories are honored, voices are amplified, and community comes together.

A heartfelt thank you to Valencia Martin for trusting Black Stone to host the launch of Unbound. Your powerful storytelling and meaningful conversation made the afternoon one to remember.

To everyone who attended, purchased a book, shared a kind word, took a photo, or simply showed up to support—you are helping build something bigger than a bookstore. You are helping build a community where history, culture, and storytelling continue to thrive.

If you missed the event, don't worry—we still have signed copies of Unbound available while supplies last.

Thank you for believing in our mission. Thank you for supporting independent bookstores. And thank you for choosing Black Stone.

Many stories. One community. Countless conversations.

We'll see you at the next chapter.
