All of our bagpipes are crafted from the finest materials, using traditional skills learned in Scotland. Attention to detail & dedication to the highest standards of quality, guarantee a bagpipe that is more than just a musical instrument, but also a work of art. We invite you to look at some of the most unique and distinctive bagpipes to be found anywhere. We do however, meticulously craft a small number of the best sounding and most beautiful looking bagpipes each month. MacLellan bagpipes has followed this philosophy since it's beginning in 1988. The Glen family name is legendary in the world of bagpipes - with roots tracing back to John Glen (born July 29, 1755). When John and his wife Betty moved the family to Edinburgh’s Cowgate in the early 1800s, their sons picked up trades, commerce, and the craft that would carry the Glen name into piping history. It’s a story of family, music, and tradition - the kind of legacy that still inspires makers today.

Some work is measured in hours. Other work is measured in generations.

At MacLellan Bagpipes, Labor Day feels like a fitting moment to recognize the hands behind the instrument. Hands shaped by years at the lathe and workbench. Hands guided by experience, patience, and an ear for what a great Highland bagpipe should become.

Roddy has spent decades turning raw materials into instruments capable of carrying music, memory, celebration, and remembrance around the world.

There is something special about a craft where the maker leaves a little piece of himself in every instrument, knowing someone else may still be playing it long after the workbench grows quiet.

Today, we celebrate skilled hands, honest work, and a tradition still being built one set of pipes at a time.

Listen to your bagpipe.

It will teach you patience. Discipline. Resilience. It will make you stronger, sharpen your focus, and occasionally humble you in ways you never saw coming.

But here’s the important part:

Your bagpipe doesn’t give a $hi+ about you.

It doesn’t care if you’re tired. It doesn’t care if you’re frustrated. It doesn’t care how talented you think you are, how long you’ve been playing, or how badly you want to improve.

You either pick it up and put in the work, or you don’t.

And every time you pick it up, it gives you the same deal:

“This is going to be hard. It’s going to take time. You’re going to struggle. But if you keep showing up and doing the work, the payoff can be incredible. Take it or leave it.”

There’s something wonderfully honest about a bagpipe.

It doesn’t reward intentions.
It rewards effort.
It rewards consistency.
It rewards the willingness to be uncomfortable long enough to become better.

Maybe there’s a bigger lesson in there.

Life is a lot like a bagpipe.

The opportunity is sitting right in front of you. Nobody can blow it for you. Nobody can squeeze the bag for you. Nobody can put in the hours for you.

At some point, you simply have to pick it up and play.

It’s on you. Always has been. Always will be.

Instrument-grade African Blackwood is something entirely different from ordinary lumber.

Only a small portion of harvested wood has the straight grain, density, stability, dimensions, and lack of defects required for precision musical instruments. Finding stock suitable for drones and other bagpipe components takes careful selection, and premium billets command a significant price because truly usable material is limited.

Then the real work begins.

Each piece must be seasoned, evaluated, turned, bored, fitted, and finished with precision. You cannot rush the wood, and you cannot rush the craftsmanship.

At MacLellan Bagpipes, exceptional instruments take time.

When you are building something meant to make music for generations, it is worth the wait.

One very proud dad, pipemaker, and band supporter. 💜🎶

Roddy couldn’t be prouder of the Rose & Thistle Ladies' Pipe Band and everything this remarkable group accomplished during their time in Scotland.

This trip was especially meaningful for the MacLellan family. Roddy’s daughters were both in the circle, Taylor on pipes and Kyle on snare, while Roddy made the journey across the Atlantic to lend a hand tuning the band and supporting them throughout the week.

The qualifier didn’t deliver the ending everyone hoped for. Rose & Thistle finished 12th in their qualifying group, bringing their 2026 Worlds campaign to a close before the final.

But a trip to the Worlds is about so much more than a number on a results sheet.

It’s about the music, friendships, long rehearsals, shared experiences, and standing together in a circle in Scotland alongside bands from around the world.

Rose & Thistle is something special: a truly global ladies pipe band, bringing musicians together through a shared love of pipe band music.

Roddy is coming home incredibly proud of his daughters, incredibly proud of the band, and excited to see where this journey goes next.
