We have been selling the unique, rare, "Red Earth" arabica from Khe Sanh, near the Laos border, for a few years now. Recently, we added a new farm, and put that in the new Single Estate Series of high-end, specialty coffees. All we can say is WOW. And to repeat, you really really need to try this.

To understand why this cup is so mind-bending, so important if you love coffee the way we do, you first have to understand the land it comes from.

Khe Sanh sits on a high plateau near the Laos border, where Vietnam narrows and the land shifts — drier winds, heavier skies, and soil the color of rusting iron. This is not a traditional Arabica region. It was never built for volume or part of Vietnam’s main coffee system. What it has instead is a land that behaves differently.

Deep red basalt soil, rich in minerals, absorbs heat by day and releases it quickly at night. This cycle slows the cherries, forcing gradual development. Moisture comes in waves — monsoon humidity balanced by cooler mountain air. Sugars build in layers, acidity forms with structure, and the cup carries both weight and clarity.

Khe Sanh is better known for its past than its agriculture. But those same conditions have quietly made it distinctive for coffee. This is not a polished, uniform Arabica. It is shaped by contrast — heat and cooling, strength and balance. Red Earth Arabica puts all that in the cup.

Its another day, another time to explore Vietnam through great coffee!

Far to the north, where Vietnam rises to merge into the Laos and China borderlands, small coffee farms cling to the mountainsides of Son La. The light shifts constantly, and the mountain weather moves without pattern, and can change quickly without warning. The terrain is steep. The nights are cool.

For generations, these small, scattered family farms worked in isolation, their remarkable harvest quietly moving down from the peaks without name or sourcing records. These farms and this coffee remained largely unknown outside the region. Today, the coffee from these mountains is finally receiving some small part of the recognition this coffee deserves.
