Ocean Vuong was born in Saigon, Vietnam and raised in Hartford, Connecticut in a working class family of nail salon and factory laborers, he was educated at nearby Manchester Community College before transferring to Pace University to study International Marketing. Without completing his first term, he dropped out and enrolled at Brooklyn College, where he graduated with a BA in Nineteenth Century American Literature.
He writes about tenderness without making it sentimental, about violence without making it loud, and about memory as something fragile—something we carry even when we wish we could put it down.
He reminds us that sometimes the most profound things in life are not the grand ones, but the small moments we almost overlook: a mother’s hands, a childhood room, a body learning how to exist in the world, a love that could not stay.
Reading Ocean Vuong feels like being reminded that softness is not weakness. Sometimes, softness is the bravest way we survive.
