After 31 years of marriage, I discovered a key to a storage unit in my husband's old wallet — I went there without informing him.
The night my husband was taken to the hospital, everything unfolded rapidly.
An ambulance. Bright lights. Words like "complications" and "we need to operate now."
I stayed with him until they wheeled him through double doors and told me I couldn't proceed any further.
By the time the doctor emerged, the procedure had been completed. He mentioned it went well, but my husband would be under anesthesia for several hours.
I sat beside his bed, listening to the rhythmic beep of the monitor.
Eventually, a nurse advised me to go home and gather a few items — clothes, toiletries, a phone charger. He would be staying for a few days.
My car was in the shop, so I needed to use his.
When I returned home, I couldn't locate his keys at all. Not on the counter. Not by the door. Not in his jacket.
That's when I began searching for the spare keys.
I approached his side of the dresser — the drawer he typically used for random items he didn’t want to discard. Old receipts. Cords. Loose change.
That’s where I discovered it.
A small, worn wallet. Not the one he used daily. An older one.
Inside, there was no cash.
Just keys.
Several of them.
And one that puzzled me.
It had a plastic tag from a local storage facility… and a unit number inscribed in black marker.
My stomach knotted.
In our 31 years of marriage, my husband had never brought up renting a storage unit. Not once.
I took the spare car key from the wallet.
I paused for a moment.
Then I took the storage key as well.
I placed the wallet back where I found it and drove to the hospital.
He was still unconscious. Still out of reach.
I lingered there for a long moment, holding his hand, gazing at his face.
Then I made a decision I never anticipated.
After leaving the hospital, instead of returning home, I entered the storage facility's address into my phone.
When I arrived, I unlocked the storage unit… and my knees nearly buckled. ⬇️
