"He turned one, so we turned him around." 🚗

It is the most common car seat mistake in South Africa, and it is such an easy one to make, because a birthday feels like a milestone and a kilogram does not.

Here is the thing though. In a frontal crash, a rear facing seat spreads the force across the whole shell and your child's back. Forward facing, that force loads the neck instead, and a toddler's neck is not ready for it yet. So the rule is weight, not age.

Our Mamakids Orbit rear faces from birth to 13kg, which is roughly 18 months, then turns around and takes them all the way to 36kg. One seat, the whole journey ✅

Term 4 started yesterday, which means they are back in that seat twice a day from this morning. Worth thirty seconds in the driveway tomorrow to check the harness 🧡

The first thing she will ever see is your face 🤍

And for the first month, honestly, not much else. Newborns see about 20 to 30cm in front of them, in black and white. That is roughly the distance from your arms to your eyes, which is not a coincidence.

By 1 to 3 months she starts following movement. Around 4 to 6 months colour arrives and the world gains depth. By 7 to 12 months she is close to adult vision, and reaching for every single thing she can see 🌈

Which is why the soft pastel toy gets ignored and the ceiling fan gets twenty minutes of rapt attention. It is not taste. It is contrast and movement, and at that age it is all she has.
