Black Oystercatcher Wines

Black Oystercatcher Wines Distinctive wines from the cool tip of Africa. www.blackoystercatcher.co.za Black Oystercatcher is a family-run wine farm at the cool southernmost tip of Africa.

Here the boutique Black Oystercatcher Wines are made from the intensely fruity grapes, formed in Cape Agulhas’ extreme growing conditions. And having farmed at Cape Agulhas for generations, we, the Human family, know these conditions well. We use the constant coastal winds, our marginal soils and the unique geology to grow our small compact berries. The result? Top quality cool climate wines with penetrating, fruit flavours and a distinctive minerality.

We’re giving a special shoutout to Fritz Damons – our ‘vineyard whisperer’ 🧑‍🌾🍇

Fritz grew up in the region and when he joined as a full-time employee in 2009, he had already been part of our family for years.

Starting as a general worker, Fritz learned from the land and leaned into his natural leadership skills. Today, he’s the team leader in charge of all our vineyard management – and he wants to share his knowledge and experience with his younger team members

“It was always my dream to work with my own team of people. I didn’t think that it would ever happen, but it did,” he says. “I am glad that Dirk recognised that in me, and for my family’s support.”

Winter brings its own special pace to the farm 🌬️

On crisp mornings you may find our team out in the vineyard, pruning the vines in the mist.

Or we might be building a fire in the venue, with our guests settling in for a cosy wine tasting.

Either way, the season always delivers a spectacular atmosphere. Things may slow down in the colder weather, but the work we do lays the foundation for our next harvest and vintage.

Always learning, always growing… 🍇🤓🎓

We recently hosted Hanno van Schalkwyk from Vinpro on the farm to conduct a special staff training session on winter pruning.

Our team enjoyed an informative day filled with new information to develop our pruning skills and improve our vine care knowledge.

We look forward to seeing the fruits of our craft when harvest time comes!

For generations, the land has looked after us 💚

The landscape leaves its imprint on every bottle of wine. It's only right that we show the same care in return.

That’s why our wine-making philosophy is to work the land with the least possible interference, in the most natural way.

As a proud member of the Nuwejaars Wetlands SMA , we have dedicated our land to conservation. Through this venture our landscape – including the private property of 25 landowners – can be managed as an ecological unit, to the benefit of the many wild and rare species that call the area home.
