🌿 HAND-KNOTTED PERSIAN TABRIZ CARPET — IRAN, c.1989 🌿

I am considering parting with a particularly beautiful Persian carpet from my personal collection.

This hand-knotted Tabriz carpet from Iran is accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin, dated 15 August 1996.
The certificate records the carpet as being seven years old at the time of certification, placing its manufacture at approximately 1989.

Originating from Tabriz, Iran, the carpet features an intricate traditional medallion design with exceptionally detailed floral work throughout. The reverse beautifully demonstrates the intricacy of the hand-knotted construction and the numerous individual colour changes required to create the design.

• Construction: Handmade / hand-knotted
• Quality: Approximately 40–50 Raj (photographic assessment; not independently certified)
• Materials: Wool, silk and cotton, as documented on the original certificate

• Provenance: Original Certificate of Origin, Al Mashi Carpet, Sharjah, UAE, dated 15 August 1996
• Condition: Exceptionally well preserved for its age

The carpet has been carefully maintained and presents beautifully throughout. Its pile remains remarkably well preserved, while the borders, detailed pattern and fringed ends remain in excellent condition.

The original Certificate of Origin will accompany the carpet.

For market context: A very fine hand-knotted Persian Tabriz of almost identical dimensions (3.08 × 2.07 m), described as 50 Raj and wool and silk, is currently offered by established South African specialist Heerat Carpets at R55,000 - on sale, from a regular retail price of R85,000.

Individual Persian carpets naturally vary according to age, materials, knotting, condition and provenance.

The white-to-ivory linen ground is decorated with elaborate counted cross-stitch embroidery in a charming palette of navy blue, red, green, pink, yellow and soft brown.

The embroidery creates a highly decorative rectangular framework incorporating geometric diamond and Greek-key motifs, scrolling foliage and richly coloured floral bouquets along the borders and at the corners.

Each of the 12 matching ivory napkins carries a coordinating cross-stitched floral and scrolling motif, finished with a delicate embroidered edge. Together, they create a particularly cohesive and elegant table setting.

The combination of geometric, folk-inspired embroidery and floral sprays gives the linen a distinctly European vintage character. The intricate counted stitching is the real feature, particularly considering the many hours of careful handwork required across a cloth of this size and twelve individually embroidered napkins.

As shown in the video, the colours in the embroidery complement Colleen beautifully, creating an especially lovely setting for the porcelain. 🌸🌿

Beautiful and elegant 23-piece Royal Albert "Fragrance" tea set from the renowned "Friendship Series".

The Royal Albert Fragrance pattern is a stunning, rare English bone china design from the mid-20th century, registered in 1958 (REG NO. 839038).
It features delicate pastel florals, primarily soft pinks, blues and lavenders in rose and hyacinth motifs, accented by elegant grey scrolls and 22 carat gold edging.

**Dating Your Pieces**
The backstamp in this collection (all items are "Royal Albert Bone China England)," the registration number "Reg No 839038," and the pattern name "Fragrance", is a classic early Bone China mark used by Royal Albert from the 1940's to the 1950's.
This style was introduced around 1935-1940 when the company shifted emphasis to Bone China (replacing earlier Crown China references), but the elaborate floral garland version became standard post-World War II, aligning with the Fragrance's 1941 registration date.
It predates the 1960's-1970's script-style changes and the 1970 addition of "Ltd" after the company name.
All but one cup in this set has the later backstamp.
Production runs in the 1940's-1950's, making it an early example of the Fragrance pattern (rather than later 1960's-1980's( which runs with the simpler backstamps). Early pieces often have subtler gray scrolls, more hand-painted floral details, and higher translucency in the bone china (visible in pictutes).

**Value Adjustment**
As an early mid-century set with primarily this backstamp, it commands a premium over later productions. Combined with the globally rare large teapot (still no sightings in sales data since 2023!).

Tablecloth:
The matching tablecloth is a true vintage, handmade heirloom. Really beautiful.

🌹 BONE CHINA VS CHINA – WOULD YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE? 🌹

While helping a client search through some Moonlight Rose pieces, I placed one Royal Albert Moonlight Rose sucrier (lidded sugar bowl) amongst the other Moonlight Rose items on display.

Did you notice that one piece was different?

Most people don't.

The reason is simple: from a normal viewing distance, the difference is often impossible to see.

So what exactly is Bone China?

Fine Bone China contains bone ash as part of its composition. This gives it several characteristics that collectors have admired for generations:

🌹 Lighter in weight

🌹 Remarkably strong despite its delicate appearance

🌹 More translucent when held to the light

🌹 A warm, elegant appearance

For many years, Royal Albert built its reputation on Fine Bone China produced in England.

So how do collectors identify differences between pieces?

The answer is often found underneath rather than on top.

Collectors will look at:

🌹 The backstamp

🌹 Country of manufacture

🌹 Production period

🌹 Translucency

🌹 Weight and feel in the hand

The Moonlight Rose sucrier in this display blends beautifully with the English-made pieces around it. Unless you know what to look for, you would probably never spot it.

And that is one of the fascinating things about collecting — sometimes the real story is found on the underside of a piece rather than in the pattern itself.

And... (🤭🤣🤭) OH MY WORD... I had quite a laugh hearing myself being referred to as “the Queen of Royal Albert” in South Africa — certainly nót a title I would ever give myself — but it was shared with such kindness and humour that it truly made my day!!! 🤣🫶🏻🫶🏻

👑🏰💑.Their fairytale begins as follows...

A road trip through the Natal Midlands, an antique store visit, and one unexpected Royal

Albert discovery led this wonderful couple into the world of fine bone china — and eventually to my page while searching for the perfect Lady Hamilton dinner service for their beautiful Villa Bois du Sud.

Listening to their story in their newly released YouTube video genuinely made me smile. From afternoon teas with their first Royal Albert tea set to planning a winter dinner around a beautifully laid table, it reminded me once again how porcelain becomes part of people’s homes, traditions, and memories.

One particular line stayed with me:
“You can’t actually have a dinner without a beautiful bone china set…”

Somehow, I think many collectors will understand exactly what they meant.

The current video features the unboxing of their beautiful Lady Hamilton dinner service at Villa Bois du Sud, and there is also another video still to come — this time featuring their visit with me personally, where we spoke about Royal Albert, collecting, porcelain, and the stories behind these timeless pieces.

I’ve included a preview image from the upcoming episode, which I am very much looking forward to sharing with you soon.
