Charl’s journey with art began at a young age, but after spending time in the corporate world, he found his way back to his creative roots and reignited his passion for painting and self-expression. Inspired by the raw beauty of the natural world, from the ocean 🌊 and dramatic skies ☁️ to majestic mountains ⛰️, Charl creates bespoke abstract works that explore the connection between nature, spirit, and emotion.

Working mainly in acrylics, his pieces are filled with bold colour, movement, and energy, often drawing on the magic of flora, fauna, and transformation 🌿🦋🔥

We’re excited to announce that Aneesah Davids will be joining us for the Ludicrous Pop-Up First Thursday this April 🎨✨

Aneesah is a self-taught artist working primarily in charcoal, graphite, and pastels. Originally from the Cape Flats, her work is deeply inspired by the natural world and explores themes of conservation and the delicate relationship between humans and nature.

Through her beautiful and detailed drawings, Aneesah invites us to slow down, look closer, and reflect on both the beauty of the natural world and what is at risk through climate change and habitat loss.

We’re excited to welcome Mariska Exley to our next First Thursday Art Exhibition on Thursday, 05 March 2026.

Mariska is a mostly self-taught Fine Arts artist based in the beautiful landscapes of the Free State, South Africa. Since childhood, she’s been captivated by art, drawing inspiration from the diverse cultures and rich natural scenery of our homeland.

Her work celebrates the soul of South Africa - from the power and presence of our wildlife to the expressive faces of its people. Expect pieces that feel bold, warm, and full of character.

This First Thursday at Ludicrous Pop-Up, we’re honoured to showcase Mark Wright, a Kunye Art Foundation artist whose creative journey began in an unexpected place.

In 2009, Mark was admitted to a clinic for a gambling addiction, and it was there that he was introduced to art as a form of therapy. What started as healing became a passion, and today his work is a reminder of how creativity can help rebuild, refocus, and restore.

Mark is currently loving landscapes, working mainly in acrylics, and he is also excited to keep experimenting with new styles and mediums, including oils and watercolours. Most days you’ll find him in his garage painting, and he even builds his own frames by hand, adding another layer of care to every piece.

As Mark says, he only wishes he discovered art 40 years ago. We’re just grateful he found it when he did, and that he’s sharing it with all of us.

We’re starting 2026 with another special feature artist, Avril Retief, a Kunye Art Foundation artist, exhibiting at the Grand Daddy Hotel.

Avril’s creative story begins with her dad. As a child, she admired his paintings and still remembers the smell of his oil paints and varnish, never imagining she’d one day follow a similar path. Her love for making things has always been there though, from pottery in 1991, to scrapbooking, to baking and decorating cakes.

In 2016, a simple YouTube acrylic tutorial changed everything. Avril picked up a brush, gave it a try, and quickly realised she’d found something that felt right. She explored different mediums, but eventually returned to where it all clicked, acrylics. Along the way, she was introduced to her mentor Derric van Rensburg, who has encouraged and guided her throughout her painting journey.

Come through and experience Avril’s work up close, meet the artist, and soak up that First Thursday energy.

We’re kicking off the year in full colour with Charl Reineke at the Grand Daddy Hotel.

Charl’s art journey started young, took a detour through the corporate world, and then came roaring back louder, bolder, and more expressive than ever. Now based in Sea Point, Cape Town, he pulls daily inspiration from the elements around him: the ocean’s force, dramatic skies, and the mountains that keep us grounded.

Working mainly in acrylics, Charl creates bespoke abstract pieces that explore the connection between nature, spirit, and emotion. Expect vibrant colour, big energy, and work that feels like it’s moving, with hints of flora, fauna, and mythical transformation woven into the emotion of each piece.
