This is one of the most personal habits I have, but also one of the most shaping.
Before a new week begins, I ask Jesus what He wants me to be to His people that week. Not only what I need to do, but what He wants to form in me. Then I write His answer down and keep it somewhere I will see it throughout my working day. For me: A note right on my laptop - unmissable.
Because the Word cannot only be something we read. It must become the mirror we are willing to keep looking into until what we see begins to change how we live.
This week, my reminder is: Gentle and quiet spirit. Thick skin. Gentle heart.
Perhaps yours will look completely different. A Scripture on your mirror. A note beside your bed. A reminder on your phone. A verse on your desk. Something the Lord spoke to you written where your eyes will find it again when your heart needs to remember.
There is no formula here. Just find simple ways to keep His Word before you. We forget. We get busy. We react. Our attention gets pulled in a hundred directions. Sometimes we simply need to place Truth somewhere we will meet it again. With these reminders, I think twice before I even allow myself to feel emotional about something that wasn't even meant to hurt me. I calm down when I feel irritation or anger rise and remember, I have a calm and gentle spirit. Thank You Jesus. These reminders shape my behaviour before I can even react. They allow me to respond in a Godly way, kindly, respectfully, but with His authority still.
And people notice. And I am ready to tell them why I do it.
James speaks about looking into the Word and continuing in it, rather than looking and then walking away forgetting what we saw. That has become precious to me. I don't only want to read the mirror. I want to remember what it showed me and allow Jesus to keep forming His reflection in me.
Find your way of remembering. Keep the Word close enough to keep changing you.
