Useful tips on what to do when besieged by white butterfly caterpillars!

WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE WHITE BUTTERFLY CATERPILLARS EATING YOUR CABBAGES & BRASSICAS
This question has been posed to me again lately. Let me take you back 20 odd years ago. During 1999 I discovered a parasitoid of the Pieris brassica (White cabbage butterfly) larvae. This parasitoid wasp, a BRACONIDAE Microgastrinae Cotesia species, first attracted my attention when I discovered its larvae in a caterpillar on which I had trod.

These 4mm long wasps with orange-brown legs and antennae as long as their bodies oviposit their eggs in the caterpillar, the wasp larvae hatch and eat the non-essential organs of their host. Once mature, the wasp larvae bore out of the already weakened caterpillar and spin yellow silk cocoons. The caterpillar does not survive this ordeal and its life-cycle is broken. Since then I noticed paper wasps taking these caterpillars to their nests to feed their offspring too. Today there are very sluggish caterpillars on my nasturtiums at home and cotesia wasp cocoons everywhere.

Solution: plant trap crops like Nasturtium, which the caterpillars love, along with plants in the Umbelliferae family: parsley, celery, yarrow, carrot, dill, coriander, parsnip and let them go to flower. The wasps and other predatory insects eat the pollen and nectar from these flowers. Also plant companions like aromatic plants, sage, rosemary and onions with your Brassicas to confuse the cabbage butterfly and strengthen the plants.

So, what you going to do, spray and disturb the predators or plant and wait for mother nature to restore harmony?
