The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time @ R80

Christopher is fifteen and has autism. He is logical and his world is perfectly balanced... but then his neighbour’s dog is murdered and the perfect balance starts to topple. Who would do such a thing?

Christopher decides to solve this crime, typical murder mystery style (Sherlock Holmes is his inspiration).
This is a wonderfully creative book, told from the perspective of a truly unique narrator.

This has been an incredibly popular book and is widely regarded as a modern classic. It is on many “Top 100” lists, including “Exclusive Books Top 101 Books to Read Before You Die”.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk @ R65

The narrator of ‘Fight Club’ is an average single man. He buys furniture from catalogues and always has the newest stuff. He participates in consumeristic American culture, but he doesn’t enjoy his life at all. He often feels numb and joins group therapy meetings to witness other’s emotions.

However, one day he meets Tyler Durden, an anarchist and he realizes what his life is missing. He joins a fight club and finally starts to feel alive. To him, feeling pain is better than feeling nothing.

But as the ideas from their fight clubs spread across America, to other numb men who need a purpose, it develops into something far more sinister...

This is an absolutely brilliant satire which inspired the cult classic movie, starring Brad Pitt.

SOLD
Time and Time Again by Ben Elton @ R70

Hugh Stanton was a soldier and has now been recruited for a life (and world) changing operation: to go back in time and stop Franz Ferdinand’s assassination and therefore prevent World War I. This is a fast paced and intense thriller. Is changing history possible or will it make everything worse?

This is a brilliant, although disturbing and very thought provoking read about time travel and the consequences of it. Perfect fans of historical reads or thrillers.

Perfume by Patrick Süskind @ R55

Grenouille was born in a fish stall in the 1700s in Paris. Immediately afterwards his mother is hanged and he goes from place to place with no one liking him. There’s just something odd about him - perhaps that he has the most sensitive nose in history. He can navigate by smell alone, can find hidden objects by their scent and has a mental catalogue of hundreds of thousands of smells.
One day in filthy, smelly Paris, he catches the whiff of a perfect and pure scent - the smell of a young woman. From this day forward he strives to recreate this smell and thereafter make the ultimate perfume, no matter the costs.

This is a wonderfully written, surprisingly witty book filled with dark humour. I expected it to be morbid and morose, but it wasn’t at all. It has wonderful descriptions - from the most disgusting and awful smell of rotting meat to the dewy and briny smell of the ocean. It is a fantastic read and I thoroughly recommend it.

The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh @ R65

An appropriate book to keep in stock at Gasp Garden Boutique!

Victoria is an orphan and has lived her life in the foster-care system. She struggles with relationships and people and prefers to be alone. Her only real love is for flowers and plants and she understands the Victorian Language of Flowers: Red roses for love, marigolds for grief and proteas for courage. Now she is eighteen and is a legal adult, she sleeps in the park (having no job or friends) and plants her own garden. A florist eventually notices her and hires her and she starts her new life.
At the flower market she meets a flower seller, a kind and interesting man. Can Victoria learn to open herself up to other people and face rejection or will she decide to stay alone and safe?
This is a beautifully written book about love and overcoming your past.

The Shape of Water by Guillermo Del Toro and Daniel Kraus @ R65

I bought this book last year for R300 new, and I don’t regret a thing, but spending R65 would have been much nicer! Anyway, I’ve already got it, so hopefully someone else can benefit from from the savings.

This book follows Eliza, a janitor, who has been mute since she was a child. She works the night shift at a research center in Baltimore. Her only other friends are “misfits” like her (in 1962 Baltimore): Zelda her coworker who is Black and Giles, her neighbour who is gay.

A creature, who was considered a God in the Amazon, is captured by the military and brought to the Research Centre to be experimented on. Eliza is cleaning the area one day when she meets him and the two connect on a deep level. She realizes he may not be as primitive as the military believe when he starts to learn sign language and communicate with her.

But now the military want to kill him to do an autopsy on his body. Can Eliza simply stand by and watch?

This is a gorgeously written book by the director of the Oscar winning film of the same name.

Both the movie and book are wonderful and highly recommended. It’s ultimately about people who don’t fit in to what society considers as normal and how we can all help each other.

Day 7/7 I’ve accepted the challenge to post 7 books in 7 days; no explanation, no reviews; just the front cover (and I’ve included art and extra pictures... because why not). The idea is to promote literacy and the love of good books. (This is sort of cheating, but too bad. I can’t choose only one of a series.)
