That's when we realized - a Garden Gnome has taken residence at Starke Ayres Garden Centre Rosebank! His name is Rodney, and we often find him in pots and plants and in more unusual places around the Garden Center.

At Starke Ayres Garden Centre Rosebank, in Mowbray / Cape Town, we enjoy watching the families running up and down looking for the elusive Rodney.

The scientific family of strawberries is Fragaria, which means fragrant in Latin. Fragaria is part of the rose family, including apples and plums (Isn’t that an interesting surprise?).

Did you know that from a botanical perspective, strawberries are not considered to be berries? Strawberries are a multiple fruit, with each seed surrounded by flesh being individual fruits. Each berry carries up to 200 seeds.

𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐊𝐄𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐕𝐄𝐒𝐓: 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙬𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 (NOW ONLY R48 / Normal price: R88) is one of our favourites and are easy to grow in your garden.

If you're not ready to commit to a full-blown berry patch, strawberries also grow well in containers. Set the plants in regular pots, hanging baskets, or window boxes. Some gardeners prefer using terra-cotta strawberry pots.

The best part? You don't have to have a backyard to harvest your own strawberries. Containers are a low-maintenance and convenient way for small-space gardeners to also enjoy cultivating strawberry plants on their apartment balconies, front stoops, or patios.

Other benefits of a hanging strawberry garden are its resistance to insect infestations and soil-borne diseases along with its compact harvest area.

𝐀𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝙕𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙖 𝙖𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙖 are springing up all over the Cape Flats. These perfectly elegant blooms show up in winter and bloom through until spring after which they die down and hibernate through our very hot summers to spring into life again next year.

These are not to be confused with the more colourful Calla lilies that are found in indoor plant departments. These lovely red, pink or yellow hybrids are descended from plants indigenous to summer rainfall areas.

They require good, well drained soil in a pot so they can be kept slightly dry once the leaves have died off. Elegia tectorum. Cape Thatching reed is a tall elegant clumping plant, often found growing in similar areas as the white Arum lily. They will happily grow amongst other fynbos plants as well as in moist soil next to ponds.
