Laniëlle Hartzenberg and Kirsten Deane will be reading to us at Obz Books on Wednesday, 29 July
Laniëlle Hartzenberg is an award-nominated South African poet, cultural producer, and Indigenous arts advocate. Rooted in her Khoi lineage and shaped by a neurodivergent perspective, her work weaves resistance and creative healing, reclaiming erased histories and amplifying q***r Indigenous narratives. Her writing appears in various anthologies, including Ons Komvanhier, Celebrating Krotoa, and Contrast Literary Journal (Vol. 53, Issue 209). She has been a finalist in competitions like Poetry Africa and the 2025 ATKV-Crescendo. As founder of Lanz Labs, Laniëlle builds tech-enabled creative ecosystems, hosts the LanieXpressed: Voice & Verse podcast, and contributes to the Xpressed Journal. A dedicated facilitator, she leads nationwide arts-based healing workshops and challenges ideologies impacting artists globally. As the niece of activist Dr. Diana Ferrus, Laniëlle honors a profound family legacy. She remains passionately committed to empowering others to trust their own voices and live their stories out loud.
Kirsten Deane is the lead Editor for English Alive, the annual literary anthology of the South African Council for English Education. Her debut collection, Disabled, But was released in April 2026 by uHlanga Press. She completed her Master’s degree in Creative Writing at the University of the Western Cape. While being a full-time student, Kirsten also spent her time working on the craft of her writing and finding her own unique voice. This resulted in her poems being published in numerous publications, nationally and internationally, including The Best New African Poets 2019, 2020, and 2022 anthologies. Her main area of research is the lived experiences of people with disabilities and exploring them through creative methodologies. As of 2024, Kirsten is a member of the International Advisory Committee for the Disability and Inclusion Africa Network. Kirsten has been a guest speaker at multiple conferences including: the 8th International Symposium of Poetic Inquiry (2022)
