Red Roman on the Rocks!

Nothing beats the vibrant glow of a freshly caught Red Roman — one of the most prized reef fish along our coastline!

Where to catch them:
Red Roman are commonly found along the South African coastline, especially from the Western Cape through to the Eastern Cape. Look for them around rocky reefs, gullies, and deeper structure (10–80m) — they love hanging close to cover.

Best baits:
These fish aren’t too fussy, but the top performers include:
• Chokka (squid)
• Pilchard (sardine)
• Red bait
• Mussel or crab
• Combo baits (chokka + pilchard = deadly!)

Pro tip: Fish near structure and be ready — they hit hard and dive straight for the reef! Strong tackle is key.

Always check local size and bag limits and fish responsibly to protect this iconic species.

Rig & Bait Presentation for Bronze Bream

Targeting bronze bream starts with the right rig and a natural bait presentation. Here's the setup that's consistently producing fish.

A simple scratching trace with a BKK Chinu Hook in the appropriate size, matched to your conditions, is all you need. Add just enough sinker weight to hold bottom while keeping the bait looking as natural as possible.

For bait, fresh pink prawn is hard to beat. Thread it neatly onto the hook, making sure the point stays exposed for solid hook-ups. A few wraps of bait cotton will secure everything in place without affecting the presentation.

Cast into shallow gullies, rocky edges, or sandy patches alongside reef where bronze bream naturally feed. Let the bait settle, stay in contact with your line, and be ready—these fish often start with a gentle tap before committing.

Keep your presentation neat, your hooks sharp, and your bait fresh. Sometimes the simplest setup is all it takes to fool these hard-fighting reef specialists.

Bronze bream on the chew

A firm favourite along the Eastern Cape coastline, bronze bream (bluefish) are a go-to target year-round—especially when the sea turns rough and pushes white water over the reefs.

If you’re unsure which hook to trust, the BKK Offset Heavy Circle-SS range has you covered. Sizes 1/0 to 3/0 are spot on, with 3/0 being the better option when there’s a chance of bigger fish moving through—like steenbras.

Paired with natural bait, these hooks deliver solid hook-ups and reliable performance where it counts.

Draggin’ Ned Weedless

The BKK Draggin’ Ned Weedless is designed specifically for Ned Rig presentations. Features include BKK’s signature SS coating and a sharp needle point for enhanced pe*******on, and an O’Shaughnessy forged bend to maximize strength. We elaborated further on the concept of a classic Ned head by adding a series of details that make this jighead unique: a recessed eye to reduce snags and protect the knot when fishing over rocky bottoms, a baitkeeper designed to fit both elastomeric and standard soft bait compounds, and ribs on the underside of the head for increased sensitivity when dragging the bait on the bottom. The final touch is on the head, where size and weight specifications are embossed for easy selection.

The Draggin’ Ned comes in two different colors: matte green pumpkin and matte black for stealthier presentations. The weedless version features a nylon guard. Two sizes available (1 and 1/0), weight range 1/16 – 1/4oz. All these details and combinations make the Draggin’ Ned the ultimate jig head for finesse standup approaches with 4-10lb lines.

Straight Point Vs Curved Point

BKK Range of 4X Treble hooks for live/dead baits and lures.
4X Viper-41-Straight Point -Suited for Live/Dead baits
The Viper-41 is a strong and shiny 4x treble hook designed with long and straight needle points and a very aggressive bend, developed eyeing at topwater techniques. To reduce the overall weight of the hook and to make it stay closer to the lure we shortened the welded section of the treble, thereby also providing more flexibility to the structure. The point is designed to maximize the hook-up rate when fishing topwater or when targeting fish that suck in the lure, while the aggressive shape of the bend ensures that the hook does not come off when the fish thrashes and jumps out of the water. The Viper-41 is coated in Bright Tin to resist even harsh saltwater environments.
Size (1/0, 1, 2 & 4)

4X Raptor Z- Curved Point -Suited for Lures
The Raptor-Z incorporates BKK’s latest manufacturing technologies, being engineered to hook strong and aggressive “monster” fish and stay hooked to the very end. Thanks to BKK’s Hand ground technology and Ultra-Antirust coating, it is equipped with ultimate impaling power, being able to pe*****te even the hardest bony jaws and superior corrosion resistance. BKK’s Slim Ring Technology further allows for an easier attachment of split rings. It is one of the most used and popular treble hooks for a wide range of applications.

A solo mission chasing one of my all-time favourite targets — bronze bream

There’s nothing quite like the fight of these fish when you’re using the right tackle. Light gear + the right setup = seriously fun sessions!

Hook tip: How to set a BKK inline circle hook properly
When fishing with circle hooks, don’t strike! Instead:
Let the fish take the bait
Slowly reel into the fish and let the hook turn and set itself in the corner of the mouth

That’s the magic of a circle hook — it does the work for you if you stay patient.

Bait choice
Keep it simple:
• Pink prawn
• Sand prawn
• Chokka

You don’t need a massive bait — smaller, neat presentations often get better bites.

Hook size
A BKK 1/0 > 3/0 inline heavy circle hook is spot on:
Perfect bait fit
Ideal for the size of a bronze bream’s mouth
Great hook-up rate when used correctly

Fishing smart beats fishing hard every time

Targeting Bronze Bream (Bluefish) in Rough Conditions

A very popular fish to target along the Eastern Cape coastline throughout the year is the bronze bream, commonly known as bluefish. These fish thrive in rough, turbulent water and are often most active when the sea is working. Areas with white water, foamy gullies, and rocky structure provide the perfect feeding environment, as the surge dislodges crabs, mussels, and other food sources that bronze bream eagerly hunt.

Because of this feeding behaviour, anglers often find that the rougher the conditions, the better the chances of connecting with quality fish. Fishing close to rocky ledges, gullies, and channels where water pushes through structure can be particularly productive.

Choosing the Right Hook

When targeting bronze bream, selecting the correct hook plays a crucial role in improving your hookup ratio and landing more fish. One of the best options currently available is the BKK range of inline heavy circle hooks.

These hooks are designed with strength and reliability in mind, making them ideal for fishing in rough terrain where fish must often be pulled away from rocks and structure. The inline circle design also helps promote corner-of-the-mouth hook-ups, reducing deep hooking and improving catch-and-release survival if you choose to release your fish.

For most bronze bream applications, hook sizes between 1/0 and 3/0 work extremely well. A 1/0 or 2/0 is perfect for standard baits such as red bait, mussel, or prawn when targeting average-sized fish. However, if you are fishing in areas known to produce larger fish, or where there is the possibility of hooking species such as white or red steenbras, stepping up to a 3/0 hook is often the better choice.

Why BKK Hooks Stand Out

In recent years, BKK has really stepped up its game in the fishing tackle market. Their hooks are becoming increasingly popular among anglers targeting edible species due to their exceptional sharpness, strong forged construction, and corrosion-resistant coatings.

These features make them especially well suited for saltwater rock and surf fishing, where tackle must withstand both powerful fish and harsh conditions. With the right bait presentation and solid tackle, these hooks provide anglers with confidence when fishing challenging areas.

Final Tip

When fishing for bronze bream in rough water, remember that presentation and placement are key. Focus on fishing your bait close to the structure and inside the white water, where fish are actively feeding. Pairing good bait with strong, reliable hooks like the BKK inline heavy circle range will greatly improve your chances of landing these hard-fighting coastal fish.
