The story of a craft angel,
(Or any other handmade item)
It's christmas time and markets are abound, you pop the family in the car for a family outing making memories in the process. You browse through the market sometimes something catches your attention and you think, that's really nice, but not what you're looking for right now or not quite your style and you move on. But sometimes something catches your attention and you think, yes I like it but I can make it myself for cheaper, and this is where this story starts.
No, you cannot and let me tell you why. The particular angel sells for R25.00 to get to the angel you need 2 types or more string for her dress, another for her hair, a bead for her face. A ball of string prices at R35 for the main part, R45 for the tying together, the hair is R26 for a bunch, beads R16 a packet. Now add the time and petrol to get the materials. The total (excleding what you value your time on) is already at R169. Then you need to google how to make the angel and data costs gets added to the cost of making the angel. You would need to make at least 7 angels to break even, after the 7 angels you have 3 loose beads, a 1/4 ball of string, over half of the hair material en 3/4 of the second ball of string, that needs to find a place in your home (until you eventually throw them all out after the 3rd springclean). That's if you got into the mood to actually make the angel and all the materials don't find their way from the dinning room table, to the sideboard drawer, to the wendy.
The crafter not only have taken all that schlep out of your hands, but also paid for the stall, got up early to set up and worked late nights to finish the product.
So next time buy the that handmade item, it is cheaper and more time efficient in the end, and you get to support a small business as a bonus, and enjoy the time (and money) you saved with a smile on your face.
