History👇

Invented by English soft-drink maker Hiram Codd in 1872, the Codd-neck bottle was designed specifically for carbonated drinks like soda and mineral water.

​The Marble Mechanism

​How it worked: The bottle was filled upside down. The pressure of the gas pushing from within pressed a glass marble firmly against a rubber washer in the neck, creating an airtight seal without needing a cork.

​To open: A wooden plunger or thumb pushed the marble down into the pinched chamber below, which trapped the marble so it wouldn't block the liquid while pouring.

​Age

​Era: Circa 1880s – 1920s.

​Most Codd bottles in South Africa date from the late Victorian or Edwardian periods, as production faded around the 1930s with the widespread adoption of crown caps (bottle caps).
