🌾 Poa annua (also known as Annual Bluegrass, Poa, or Winter Grass) is a common and persistent lawn w**d. It is difficult to control because each plant can produce several hundred seeds per season, and these seeds can remain dormant for years before germinating 🌾

🌾 Identification:
• Dark green colour
• Upright seed stalk that rises above the lawn (even if cut, it can still produce seeds)
• Visible in late spring and early summer

🌾 Growth habits:
• Thrives in cool, moist conditions, particularly in shaded or damp areas with regular irrigation
• Prefers nitrogen-rich soils
• Susceptible to heat stress; often browns off and dies back during hot periods
• Commonly invades lawns when warm-season grasses like Kikuyu or Cynodon go dormant
• Often appears as distinctive “leopard spot” patches during winter months

🌾 Control methods:
• Early stage infestation: Hand removal of a few plants
• Established infestation: Use a post-emergent herbicide
• Prevention: Apply pre-emergent herbicide in early autumn and late spring to stop seeds from germinating

🌾 Timing is critical:
Poa annua germinates in autumn and early spring, so herbicide applications must be properly timed.

Late Summer to Autumn: The main germination period begins as soil temperatures drop, specifically when they fall below approximately 20°C (often following late summer rains).

Late Winter to Early Spring: A second, smaller wave of germination occurs as temperatures start to rise again.

🐛 🚨WARNING - White Grubs 🚨 🐛
Noticing brown patches, spongy turf, or birds digging in your lawn? You may have white grubs - beetle larvae (like the African Black Beetle) that feed on grass roots and cause serious damage if left untreated.

🐛 🪲 Lawn Grubs - Is Your Lawn Under Attack?
White grubs damage lawns by feeding on roots, causing irregular brown patches, spongy turf, and grass that lifts easily. Treat infestations immediately using the correct soil insecticide, watered in thoroughly - ideally in the early morning or evening. Do not apply in the heat of the day.

🚨 Signs to look out for:
✔️ Brown or dying patches that spread quickly
✔️ Grass lifting easily like a carpet
✔️ Lawn wilting despite regular watering
✔️ Increased bird activity on the lawn

Both Kikuyu and Cynodon lawns can be affected, especially during the warmer months.

🔍 How to check for grubs:
Lift the turf by cutting and peeling back a 30 cm square section of grass about 5–8 cm deep using a spade, especially near damaged, brown, or spongy areas. If the turf lifts easily with few roots and you find more than 5–10 C-shaped white larvae, you have an infestation.

✅ How to protect your lawn:
🌿 Maintain a healthy, well-fed lawn to improve resistance
💧 Water deeply and correctly to encourage strong root growth
🧪 Treat severe infestations early with the correct soil treatment

A strong root system means a healthier, greener lawn!

08/10/2026

🌱 Ever wondered what those fine white “threads” are that suddenly appear in your Kikuyu lawn? 🌾

If you have a low cut Kikuyu lawn you may have noticed these delicate white threads appearing across the turf.

They can look almost like tiny spiderwebs or strands of cotton, but they are actually part of the Kikuyu plant’s inflorescence - its flowering structure. 🌱

🌾 Kikuyu has a hidden flower.

Kikuyu (Cenchrus clandestinus) has a rather unusual flowering habit. Unlike many grasses that produce obvious seed heads above the leaves, the Kikuyu inflorescence is largely hidden within the leaf sheaths.

In fact, clandestinus means “hidden” or “secret.” 🤫

🪡 So, what are the white threads?

The fine white structures you see are the reproductive parts of the inflorescence, including the stamens and feathery stigmas. These extend from the leaf sheaths to facilitate wind pollination.

✂️ Why do they appear after mowing?

With a low-cut Kikuyu lawn, the visible inflorescences can be cut off during mowing. Yet, new inflorescences can appear again soon afterwards.

So, you’re not necessarily seeing the old inflorescences becoming visible. Kikuyu can produce a fresh flush of inflorescences.

Interestingly, regular mowing or grazing has been reported to stimulate flowering in Kikuyu, which may help explain why these fine white inflorescences can become so noticeable on mown turf.

So you can mow them off today and, a few days later, find another crop of fine white inflorescences appearing across the lawn! 🌱

Kikuyu flowering can be seen during the warmer growing months, particularly when the grass is actively growing.

Kikuyu can reproduce by seed, but established turf also spreads very effectively through its stolons and rhizomes, helping it recover and fill in the lawn.

So, the next time your freshly mown Kikuyu develops a fine, white, spiderweb-like appearance, take a closer look.

You’re seeing one of Kikuyu’s fascinating and often overlooked natural processes, the emergence of its hidden inflorescence. 🌾🌱

🍃🌬️ What does OxyTurf do in your maintenance program?

🍃🌬️ Systematically increases aerobic microbial and enzymatic activity in the soil to fulfil its digestive role.

🍃🌬️ Generates a slow and stable catalase-like release of oxygen in the application area, that is sustained in time.

🍃🌬️ Allows gradual reduction of thatch to optimal levels.

🍃🌬️ Permanently reduces the black layer/excessive organic build-up in the profile.

🍃🌬️ Allows the opening of pores in the soil, improving infiltration, permeability and oxygen circulation.

🍃🌬️ Stimulates turf growth through nitrogen provided by recycling microbial populations.

🍃🌬️ Improves soil compactness to levels compatible with sports practice.

🍃🌬️ Promotes root development in mass and extension, with deeper rooting.

🍃🌬️ Reduces turf stress and accelerates turf recovery.

🍃🌬️ Promotes plant resistance to pathogens and opportunistic diseases.

🍃🌬️ Reduces conditions for unwanted algae and moss growth.

🌱KIKUYU GRASS SEED – Kikuyu is one of South Africa’s most popular grasses, perfect for: Domestic lawns, Golf course fairways, Sports fields and General landscaping 🌱

🌱OCTOBER PRICE:
500g Bulk pack at R430.00
100g and 50g Retail packs are also avaiable.
Excluding vat & delivery
** Preferred method of payment EFT.

🌱KIKUYU LAWN:
1) Warm season grass (goes dormant in frost or when soil temps drop below 10°C).
2) Needs watering 2 to 3 times a week for 20 minutes. Depends on the area.
3) Needs regular fertilizer applications +- once every six weeks to keep it lush and green. Depends on the height of cut.
4) Can be cut very low (as little as 10 mm with intensive care) – ideal for golf course fairways.
5) For a home lawn, mow weekly at ±30 mm for best results.
6) Very versatile, bright green, recovers well from damage.
7) Kikuyu is not very shade-tolerant (needs at least 80% sun for optimum growth).

🌱ESTABLISHMENT TIPS:

1) Plant in spring & summer (especially in frosty areas).
2) Best germination at 16–24°C air temp.
3) Grows best at 25–35°C air temp.
4) Struggles when soil temperature drops below 15°C (growth starts to slow down for dormancy).
5) For ultra-low mowing, use a growth regulator (e.g. NoMow or Primo Maxx) to avoid scalping.

🌱SEEDING RATE:
1) Overseed at 500g per +- 200m2.
2) New seeding 500 to 700g per 100m2.
3) Lower or higher seeding rate depends on how quickly you want coverage.
