These rifles have their roots in target shooting and was designed for full-bore target shooters in an era when surplus war rifles such as the Lee-Enfield, Lee-Metford, P14 and others were used. The Musgrave facility[1] (located in Bloemfontein, Republic of South Africa) where they were built housed a giant gunsmithing concern. RSA actions and earlier hammer-forged barrels were manufactured at Lytt

elton Engineering Works. By 1989, Musgrave employed 220 people and produced 6,000 hunting rifles per year over a ten model range. Musgrave's product range diversified to include shotguns, sporting equipment, fuel locking devices and other items. Though Musgrave was an ARMSCOR subsidiary since 1971, the name finally disappeared under Denel control,[2] in August 1996. The end of this era came about when Musgrave's Bloemfontein facility was closed down and some of the equipment and personnel relocated to Lyttelton Engineering Works (LEW) where hunting rifles under the "Vektor" (Vector) name were built for a short while, alongside the R4 assault rifle, Z88 pistol and other small armament which forms DENEL's main focus.[3]
The dormant Musgrave name was revived by a private owner and new semi-custom built Musgrave rifles from the town of Ermelo, Mpumalanga, RSA entered the market.

The Story of Turkish Walnut – From Grade 2 to Grade 8 Exhibition

Turkish walnut has been the heart and soul of fine sporting rifles for over 150 years. It is not just wood — it is a living piece of history, grown in the mountains of Turkey where the combination of soil, climate and centuries-old trees produces some of the most beautiful grain patterns on earth.

Here’s what makes each grade special:

-Grade 2– Clean, straight grain with subtle figure. Reliable and classic.
- Grade 3 – The starting point for every Musgrave Deluxe. Noticeable curl and colour variation begin to appear.
- Grade 4 – Beautiful fiddleback and flame start to dance across the stock.
- Grade 6– Rich, deep figure with strong contrast and dramatic grain flow.
- Grade 8 Exhibition – The absolute pinnacle. Heavy marble, lightning bolts, incredible depth of colour and one-of-a-kind patterns that collectors dream about.

Every piece we use at Musgrave is hand-selected by our team. We look for density, stability and that unmistakable beauty that only mature Turkish walnut can offer.

This is part of the Musgrave tradition that goes back more than 100 years. From the earliest rifles made in the 1920s right through to the new Beast M21x we build today, we have always believed a rifle should not only perform flawlessly in the field, but also become a family heirloom that grows more beautiful with time.

Swipe through the photos to see the journey from Grade 2 all the way to Grade 8 Exhibition. Each stock tells its own story.

Which grade speaks to you the most?

The next generation is already here.

At the Safari Outdoor SA Open 2026 (SA Hunters Veldskiet) this weekend, our young ambassador Frik Jnr du Plooy once again showed what dedication, discipline and the right rifle can achieve.

Competing with his Musgrave M21 in .243 Frik Jnr has grown up with this rifle at his side — from his very first shots as a youngster to now earning his Protea colours for the second year running . It is more than just a competition ; it has become part of his journey in the sport.

Endurance, focus and a deep love for shooting — these are the qualities we see in the young athletes who represent the future of South African hunting and sport shooting. Watching Frik Jnr compete reminds us why we build Musgrave the way we do .

Here are a few moments from the range this weekend.

Well done, Frik Jnr. Keep shooting, keep learning, and keep making us proud.

Musgrave Rifles is very proud!

Congratulations to Frik Jnr du Plooy who, at the Safari Outdoor SA Open 2026 (SA Hunters Veldskiet) at the Bokkie Kritzinger Shooting Range near Joubertina this weekend, earned his Protea jacket for the second year in a row .

Frik was one of only six juniors nationwide to achieve this honour. He competed the entire event with his Musgrave M21 in .243 win and once again proved himself as one of South Africa’s top young shooters.

We would also like to congratulate the other five juniors who received their Protea jackets alongside Frik. You all performed exceptionally well — a fantastic achievement by the entire group of young athletes.

We are extremely proud that a young athlete like Frik achieves success with a South African-made Musgrave rifle. This is exactly why we do what we do — to build rifles that help the next generation reach their dreams.

Here is the photo of the six juniors who received their Protea jackets.

Well done, Frik! We look forward to many more successes.

Exciting Achievement Announcement from Musgrave Rifles!

Fellow hunters and sport shooters,

We are proud to share that the first interchangeable barrel Musgrave ever designed and built in South Africa has officially launched at Huntex 2026.

After more than two years of intensive research, development, testing and firing hundreds of rounds, the Beast M21x action is now a reality — and the first rifles are already coming off our production line in Ermelo.

This is a true South African first. The Beast M21x was created to give shooters real flexibility: one action, multiple calibers, without compromising strength or reliability. From the .243 Win to the .300 Win Mag, .375 H&H and right up to the big-bore Afrika models, you can now change barrels in the field or at the range with simple instructions — no gunsmith required.

Key achievements we have delivered in 2026:
- Fully functional controlled round feed with claw extractor
- Our patented Stalk Lock safety built for safe carry in the African bush
- Proven interchangeable barrel system with dedicated bolt head groups
- Robust receiver and locking lug design that handles high-pressure magnum and big-bore cartridges
- Prefit barrels that maintain consistent accuracy and allow easy swapping

Every barrel is made in-house from premium materials, button-rifled, hand-lapped and stress-relieved right here in South Africa. Each barrel carries its own serial number as required by law, so changing calibers is straightforward once the barrel is licensed.

This modular system was born from listening to you — our shooters — who wanted more versatility without buying multiple complete rifles. We studied global designs, improved on them where we could, and built something that fits the way South Africans actually hunt and shoot.

A huge thank you to every member of the Musgrave team who poured their skill and dedication into this project. Your hard work has created something we can all be proud of.

We look forward to seeing the Beast M21x in the hands of hunters and competitors across the country in the seasons ahead.

The hunting season in South Africa officially opens on 1 May.

For many of us this marks the start of a special time — time spent in the veld, walking the bush. It is about preparation, patience, and the satisfaction of a well-planned hunt.

Now is the time to check your gear, make sure your rifle is clean and sighted, and get everything ready for the months ahead. Whether you hunt plains game, bushveld, or big game, the coming season is a chance to put in the miles and make new memories.

At Musgrave we have been building rifles for exactly these moments for generations. We know how important it is to have a rifle you trust when the season begins.

Wishing all hunters a safe and successful 2026 season.
