These rifles have their roots in target shooting and was designed for full-bore target shooters in an era when surplus war rifles such as the Lee-Enfield, Lee-Metford, P14 and others were used. The Musgrave facility[1] (located in Bloemfontein, Republic of South Africa) where they were built housed a giant gunsmithing concern. elton Engineering Works. By 1989, Musgrave employed 220 people and produced 6,000 hunting rifles per year over a ten model range. Musgrave's product range diversified to include shotguns, sporting equipment, fuel locking devices and other items. Though Musgrave was an ARMSCOR subsidiary since 1971, the name finally disappeared under Denel control,[2] in August 1996. The end of this era came about when Musgrave's Bloemfontein facility was closed down and some of the equipment and personnel relocated to Lyttelton Engineering Works (LEW) where hunting rifles under the "Vektor" (Vector) name were built for a short while, alongside the R4 assault rifle, Z88 pistol and other small armament which forms DENEL's main focus.[3]
The dormant Musgrave name was revived by a private owner and new semi-custom built Musgrave rifles from the town of Ermelo, Mpumalanga, RSA entered the market.

When the wood talks and the design delivers.

This is what a proper Musgrave stock looks like in the veld.
Beautiful Turkish walnut, clean lines, and a shape that was designed with one thing in mind — keeping the shooter on the animal.

The low-coil design keeps the bore axis in a straighter line with your shoulder.
The grip doesn’t let your hand slip under recoil.
The result is less muzzle rise and the ability to actually see your shot impact, even on the bigger calibers.

A few of you commented on the previous .375 post that the silencer must be doing most of the work.

The silencer definitely helps — no argument there.
But the stock design plays the bigger role.

We just received a video from my good friend Fanie shooting his .500 Jeffery with a Musgrave stock.
Anyone who has ever fired a .500 Jeff will tell you it is one of the hardest recoiling rifles you can put to your shoulder.

Normally the muzzle ends up at about 45 degrees.
Your cheek gets a hard slap.
The trigger guard tries to imprint itself into your middle finger.
If you’re not careful, your thumb comes back and gives you a solid klap on the nose, followed by that unpleasant metallic taste.
A few choice words usually follow, together with a couple of seconds of brain fog.

That is the reality of most .458 Lott and bigger rifles.

Now watch what happens with the Musgrave low-coil stock.
The difference is clear.

The patented design keeps the bore axis in a straight line with your shoulder.
The wrist stays straight instead of bent.
The broad butt and recoil pad spread the energy properly.
