The Man with One Rifle – And the Option to Have More .
For generations, South African hunters have followed a very practical approach: buy the right rifle for the job. A fast-handling rifle for thick bushveld, a longer, flatter-shooting rifle for the open plains, and perhaps something with more authority for dangerous game. This way of thinking has served hunters well. Most serious hunters still believe in the old saying: “Beware the man with one gun, for he probably knows how to use it.”
This traditional approach is not wrong. It comes from experience, discipline, and a deep understanding of one’s rifle and its limitations. Many hunters are perfectly happy with one trusted rifle and have no desire to change.
However, as hunting conditions, game species, and personal circumstances evolve, some hunters find themselves wanting more flexibility without having to buy and licence an entire new rifle every time their needs change. This is where the Musgrave Beast M21offers a meaningful option.
A Modern Addition to Traditional Hunting
The Beast M21 was not designed to replace the traditional way of hunting. It was developed as an additional tool in the hunter’s toolbox — something that can be used when it makes sense, and ignored when it doesn’t.

A Different Approach for Sport Shooters
While hunters tend to keep their rifle in a traditional hunting stock and mainly change barrels, sport and competition shooters often use the system differently.
Many competition shooters participate in multiple disciplines that benefit from different calibers, barrel lengths, and twist rates. For them, the ability to change barrels between competitions (not during an event) offers practical advantages such as:
- Managing barrel life more cost-effectively
- Using a more affordable caliber for regular training
- Optimising the rifle for different stages or distances
- Maintaining the same action and trigger feel across different calibers
Sport shooters are also more likely to use a fully adjustable tactical chassis, which can be changed relatively quickly depending on the type of shooting they plan to do.
Two Different Worlds
It is worth noting that the way most hunters use the Beast M21 is quite different from how most sport shooters use it. A hunter will typically keep his rifle in a traditional hunting stock and simply change barrels when he wants a different caliber. Converting a hunting rifle into a full competition rifle (or vice versa) is rarely the main reason hunters choose this system.
The Beast M21 therefore serves two distinct groups with different needs, rather than trying to turn one into the other.
A Practical Way Forward
The Beast M21 does not ask hunters to abandon the old ways. It simply offers a modern option for those who may want more flexibility as their hunting evolves. Some hunters will embrace it from the start. Others may only consider it years later, when they feel the need for another caliber without wanting to buy an entire new rifle.
In the end, it comes down to personal choice. Some hunters will always prefer the man with one gun. Others will appreciate having one trusted rifle with the option to expand when necessary.
Both approaches are valid.
