On this Nelson Mandela Day, we look back at the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated his life to unity, compassion, and human dignity. Madiba famously taught us that “to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
Today, as we honor his birth, we also reflect with a heavy heart on the recent events across our nation. The displacement of our African brothers and sisters from their homes, leaving families and young children to face the vulnerability of the streets, stands in stark contrast to the values Madiba championed.
While the protection of national borders is an understandable necessity for any country, the harsh treatment of fellow Africans is deeply saddening. True leadership requires addressing the root challenges of governance and economic growth directly, rather than allowing narratives that misplace blame. Research continually shows that foreign nationals contribute significantly to our economy, making up to 9% of South Africa’s GDP, rather than driving the unemployment challenges our people face. (Studies: OECD/ILO (2018): How Immigrants Contribute to South Africa’s Economy (OECD Publishing, Paris); World Bank Group (2018): Mixed Migration, Economic Growth, and Labour Markets in South Africa.)
Madiba, the father of our nation, believed fiercely in forgiveness, reconciliation, and Pan-African solidarity. As we remember him today, let us challenge ourselves to return to his vision of ubuntu: a society built on empathy, shared humanity, and a commitment to treating every individual with basic human dignity.
Let us honor his legacy not just with words, but by striving for a more just, inclusive, and compassionate Africa. 🇿🇦✨
